I thought this was a pretty good article

Would be interested in the officials comments on it

UIL is in some trouble if they dont do something..Younger Offiicals are NOT coming into the system like they used to and their could be a SEVERE shortage soon, already a shortage now, but it could get to an extreme level in the next couple of years

that is really good stuff...

almost convinced me to be a referee...

How do you become a ref?

great article. that is how it is done. thanks. and we do need more young blood in the ranks. some of you guy's and gal's-- step up. young could be 18-50. if you have some time, join a chapter.

Biggest problem is that the pay for subvarsity is being cut next year (90% done deal) and some of the current young guys are going to quit. It will also hamper the recruitment on other new officials.

The only thing the article did not cover is the more diverse areas covered by the none metro chapters. Last week we left town at 1:00 pm for a game and got home at 3:00 am. Total driving was 380+ miles. But we got to see the #2 ranked team in 4A beat a pretty decent team.

whats wrong with CS. I work out of that chapter. my crew is rock solid. we have 95 members. 33 % are d-5's-- first or second year. every chapter is complained about. close call goes the wrong way, and they all complain, at least 50 %. it is a tough but rewarding experience to do football. many rules to learn. good way to make extra gas money, which we know is well needed. go to www.taso.org for all the chapter info.

my dad is a head linesman out of the abilene chapter. he has had a few 5A contract games, one last year with abilene high and Lubbock Monterey and this year with cooper and temple (pretty good since there is only 2 5A's in our area). he says that the test isnt hard at all. he is in his 6th year and he is a Division 3

We can use all the help we can get in most parts of the state. Be aware that your first year will generally be on subvaristy fields unless you are in the smaller chapters.

The test is not hard and you get tremendous assistance getting through it. There may be a slight pay decrease next year in some subvarsity but for those of you who are just starting it will not be a decrease as it will be all you have ever known.

Old Tiger
11-07-2007, 06:35 PM
What is the pay range that we could expect if we did sub-varsity officiating?

bigron15
11-07-2007, 06:36 PM
my dad has been trying to get me into it but i decided to wait till next year

12 Minute Quarters----------$40.00
10 Minute Quarters----------$35.00
8 Minute Quarters-----------$30.00
Cont. Clock/6 Min. Qtr-------$25.00

This is what we are hearing will be used next year. Most subvarsity are 8 - 10 min qtrs.

Most sites have 2 - 3 games a night so it could be about $100 total for the night

Assuming you are in Rio Hondo, you would go to the Rio Grande Valley Chapter:

Ernesto Lopez
ernlopez@cs.com

Tom Weekley
tandcweekley@tiagris.com

Get prepared to be run over. :D

A couple of seasons ago, one of our kids was running back a punt. The official was going across the field....our kid was running full blast. He kind of turned to run around a defender, ran smack dab into the ref......bounced off and landed on his butt. It was hilarious! :D

4 of us live 60 miles from CS. we work together every friday, they send us a fifth for BJ. talking about going to crews next year. wish they would. knowing everyone around you makes life easier on the field, but as I said, the 4 of us are almost always working together.

the 10 minute quarters we do on thursday nights are with 3 officials. they will cut us 5 dollars, and we run more than on friday nights. don't agree with that. they also need to look at gate then. there are a lot of people there on thurs. night. wish they would do a survey of officials on this new format.
