RangerJim, please watch all those crazies on the LBJ this weekend.

I hunt on my wife's family's land just South of Alvord along Big Sandy Creek.

So far, the Does are moving here but the Buck aren't much. Peak time for me is usually just before thanksgiving.

If I have a chance, I will try and post some pics sometime from my deer camera.

Anyone else have pics?

My better half is leaving the Tuesday before Thanksgiving for his annual hunt in Fla/Ga. He's been working on his local lease getting the feeders "redone" (there's a place in Ruston LA that totally rewires and cleans out the motors - he was happy to find them) but he said the deer have so many acorns to eat, they aren't eating the corn - now the hogs - that's another subject - they are everywhere  Good Luck on your hunt :)

Hey everyone,

I am looking for a day/weekend lease to take my 11 yr old and my 7 yr old to hunt this year.

We did not hunt last year and this year i had so much going on with our youth association we did not get on a lease.

We are not looking for big trophy bucks, just freezer meat, year before last we hunted Coleman, Brownwood, and Menard on weekend leases.

If anyone can point me in the right direction for a weekend lease/3 day hunt that is affordable please do so.

Thanks in advance.

After you click on the post look towards that bottom and it will say attachment and browse.

All you do is browse the files on you computer and select the file you want and then post.

Did that make any sense?

IMO...anyone that has to set feeders out and get the deer used to eating at that spot and then hide in a deer blind to shoot the unsuspecting deer isn't hunting.....it's cheating!!!

I use a 30-06 but I am thinking of buying a .270 when I get some funds availible.

Any Opinions?

Uh Oh! Now you've done it! Opened the time old debate about which caliber is best...:D

My favorite hands down is the .25-06, having said that, I own and will readily shoot a .243, .270 and the trusty old .30-06 at whitetail and Texas muleys.

Any Opinions? .270 is probably one of the best all around hunting rounds on the market. The ammo is easy to find, fairly cheap (not some expensive off-caliber). It packs plenty of punch and is fairly flat shooting. Muzzle velocity is good. Very hard to beat.

That being said, I want something thats flat shooting, fast and can reach out and dial long distance. I hunt w/ a .25-06 and love it. It is an absolute tack driver. I also have heard good things about the .25 WSSM (a little harder to find), and if you're lookin for a little more punch, the 300 WSM. It is commonly agreed that the newer WSM (Winchester Short Mags) and WSSM (Winchester Super Short Mags) have better balistics characteristics than their traditional counterparts. Something to think about there.

Hope that helps a little.

Darren

I thought that the .270 shot fairly flat?

Since I already have a 30-06 I was looking for a straighter shooting caliber.

It is a great all around cartridge...plenty of knockdown power, fairly flat, good muzzle vel. Here's a loose comparison of a few of the above mentioned rounds: (figures are for avg. performance)

Dont forget about the .257 Roberts. It is not a well known caliber. In my opinion it is one of the best calibers. It has the power for larger game, but it does not completely destroy the small to moderate sized game.

I have been shooting it ever since I was ten. I have found that is shoots extremely straight and it provides a clean one shot kill.

I shoot a remington .270. love it as it is absolutely pinpoint................but for my wife i bought a 22.250. not the best knock down power, but it will leave a blood trail out both sides. when i know i am going to shoot a doe, i will usually take the 22.250 as i know the accuracy is unmistakable. head shots are usually the order of the day. i like it when both eyeballs bulge from the socket:D if the deer aren't moving much this week i might also take my bow and try to pop an old longbeard:D

how can I get pictures from a cell phone loaded onto my computer? of course husband's phone doesn't have internet or texting so I am probably SOL - anyway - he and oldest son went to the lease this evening and son shot a huge boar hog.. not monster size or anything - but hopefully he's the big one knocking the blinds over and eating all the corn...... :D

Lost Aussie - have you ever shot a Golden Eagle? My youngest son inherited one of my dad's and my hubby is extremely jealous - he loves the way it shoots (of course it's an over/under shotgun so he doesn't hunt deer with it - it's a "bird gun" but a fine gun indeed) I don't hunt much, but I like the 25-06 BDL - but I don't like the "kick"

Thanks for the PM SW07. My wife reminded me that her uncle invited us up to Vernon. They have a pretty big ranch, Keene is their last name, they are really good people. I haven't called him yet because I am not the type to ask to hunt for free normally, even though tehy are family I feel like I would be intruding. However I have always been told if I got a chance to hunt around Vernon to do so because the deer are pretty large up there. Anyone know?

My 11 yr old is dying to get out this year.

I like axis meat much better than white tail too, just a little sweeter & more of it. But a nice white tail would be great too!

A few places I can go on with friends. One is in Segovia & the others are heading towards Uvalde. No shortage of animals. I want a trophy axis like my buddy killed (34.5" / 35.5" plus heavy & mature deer). 220 lbs. on ground. Anything over 30" is mature & worthy shooter. Great time & lots of fun.

My buddy's dad manages a few places so it is pretty cool.

And way more of it. One back strap is equal to 2 on a white tail usually. Axis can eat grass (stomach like cow) so they never go without for long. They are just bigger animals. Breed more often too. You have to watch their #s b/c they will bully the white tails. Run in herds too, not uncommon to see 20+ at a time.

And, not native to Texas (India I think) so can shoot year-around. Try the meat sometime & you will never go back. If you lived closer (or come to Houston), I can give you some. PM me if desired...
