A Friday for Forever
2007 Red Devils get Huntington's first district win in 15 years

By Nick Wade
The Lufkin Daily News

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

A Friday night, a district match-up, and an offense lining up in the "victory" formation. It can only be described by those who have felt it; the feeling that begins to swell up inside each and every player on the sideline, as the clock ticks down and the entire night starts to become a reality.

The ball is snapped, a knee is taken, and the clock arrives at its final destination. Cheers, high-fives, and all things celebratory overwhelm the players, the coaches, and the fans.

For the first time in 15 years, the Huntington Red Devils were able to capture that experience and call it their own. In convincing fashion, the Red Devils went on the road and downed the Rusk Eagles 32-6 last Friday night, sparking a wave of team and community pride.

"For us, the biggest deal is the affect it had on the community," said head coach Tommy Day. "We've had a lot of people stopping to thank us this week. To get this kind of reaction is pretty cool, and it means a lot."

Cuu Doung had 171 yards and two touchdowns on the night from his tailback position, while it was a break out game for quarterback Taylor Rosson who went 10-18 for 138 yards through the air.

The Red Devil defense was locked in all night, holding Rusk to 115 yards of total offense, with six sacks and countless pressures. In fact, the Eagles' only score came on a kick return in the final quarter. The win was Huntington's first district victory since 1992, and the first ever for Coach Day.

"Anytime you are in a five-team district, with three of those teams going to the playoffs, win one game and you are in the playoff hunt," Coach Day said. "We at least have that hope now."

The Red Devils also have a team that has accomplished more with one win than previous teams have in over a decade.

"It feels pretty good to be part of something that 14 other teams had a chance to do, but that this team accomplished," said wide receiver Hayden Smith. "A friend of my dad's who graduated from Huntington called us just to say congratulations."

Players have garnered recognition from their parents, teachers, and the community. Coach Day was even recognized at his church after the victory.

"It's helped with the ladies too," joked some of the Red Devil players.

The locker-room mood on Wednesday was light, but not lax. The players were smiling, joking, and enjoying the game they love, all while remaining focused on their game against Carthage this Friday.

"They are more upbeat," Coach Day said. "Practices have been a little more fun this week."

"It is great to get a win," said defensive standout Dalton Murray, "but that doesn't take any pressure off of our next game. Carthage is a good team and it is going to be a tough game."

While the players were poised to set their sights on this week's game, they'll all hold on to the memories they made last week. The room filled with instant chatter when some of the players were asked about the best part of the night: "When Bryant (Plemons) picked up that fumble and ran it back!" "All those sacks!" and "Having our fans on their feet!" were all tossed around amongst the players as they nodded to one another in agreement.

"To finally be the ones taking a knee at the end of game, instead of the ones watching the other team take a knee," said Smith. "That was the best part of the night."

Huntington's two wins have both come on the road this year, and the Red Devil's will hope to add to that total as they travel to Carthage on Friday.

I think that this district win was only the 2nd or 3rd district win in school history.... which dates back 26 seasons. I know for sure that it's only their 2nd win back through 1986.

I believe Huntington ISD shares a pretty significant border with Lufkin ISD... it's amazing there could be such a huge difference in success between two geographical areas in such close proximity
