I know...I know....yall are SHOCKED that I am asking a question related to football!!:D

I was wondering.....how common is it for team to change Regions during a realignment year??

Didn't that happen to some teams last time?? For some reason, LH comes to mind!!

Yep

I would say it is very common for some schools to change regions

But the number of schools that does is small

As I said that is just something I made up

Maybe WOS87 has facts to answer the question with

I think Everman won State in region 1 and 2 in consecutive years. In DFW teams change sometimes

Some things are givens. West Texas and Panhandle teams will always be Region 1 and South Texas teams (San Antonio and south) will always be Region 4 teams. Other teams can move from one region to another.

The most dramatic change I know of was Brady when they were 3A. Some two year periods Region 1 went from Panhandle straight down and Brady was part of Region 1. Two years ago they were in Region 4 with Llano, Liberty Hill and others.

It's strange the way they've drawn the line between Region II and III through East Texas.

Carthage, a team which used to be in our district when we were both 4A 10 years ago, is not only not in our district; it's not in our REGION anymore.

Theoretically, Gilmer and Carthage could meet for the Div I title.

I thought Gilmer and Jasper being the state finalists three years ago in Div II was geographically strange, but Gilmer-Carthage would take the cake.

Gainesville has went both ways (Region I and II).

its pretty much a crap shoot ... and i'd say for the most part, obviously, schools along the current regional borders are most likely to switch

5A Region 2 is screwy

Allen to Klein

Lufkin to Leander

And everything in between

Almost as bad as West Texas

But the lines have to be drawn somewhere

As mentioned above, Region I has always been Western Texas, Region II Northern Texas, Region III Eastern Texas and Region IV Southern Texas

It's thus usually the Central Texas programs that get shifted around the most.... Taylor, actually has the record currently as the only program to win a district title in all 4 regions.... and they did it in just an 11 season span from 1984-1994!!

Region I (District 8-4A Champ) in 1988
Region II (District 6-4A Champ) in 1984
Region III (District 18-4A Champ) in 1990
Region IV (District 25-4A Champ) in 1994

I would post the 3A chart but it's not color coded like the 4A ones so the 4A will serve as a better example. I have each district color-coded depending on the area of the state it covers. You can really see how certain areas of the state (especially BLUE) have been shifted to different regions over the years.

In the tables below:

Panhandle districts - Green
El Paso/Far West Texas districts - Red
Central West Texas/Permian Basin - Purple
Central Texas/San Antonio/Austin/Waco - Blue
North Central Texas/DFW Area - Brown
East Texas - Teal
Southeast Texas/Houston Metro - light red
South Texas/Corpus/Laredo/RGV - orange

Originally, the 2nd largest classification consisted of only 8 districts. This increased to 16 districts in 1956 and remained at 16 districts through 1987. In 1988 the numbering of districts in 4A increased to 32 but there were not actually 32 districts with teams assigned to each until 1996. From 1988-1995 there were not enough 4A teams to adequately fill 32 districts so there were blank districts which had no teams assigned to them. Districts paired with a blank district in the 1st round of the playoffs thus got a bye and played an Area round game as their first actual playoff game.

The color coding is indicative of the general location of the entire district for each particular year, not the individual team listed, thus for example, Corsicana could possibly be dark blue when part of a district including mainly Waco and Killeen area teams, in brown when in a district of primarily DFW area teams and light blue when in a district primarily of East Texas teams.

The schools which have been the #1 seed in their district the most times in the second largest classification since the 5 classification system began in 1951 are listed below.

22 times
Brownwood

21 times
Gregory-Portland

19 times
Bay City

17 times
Lubbock Estacado

16 times
La Marque

14 times
Andrews
Corsicana

13 times
Corpus Christi Calallen
Denison
Jacksonville

12 times
Belton
Kilgore
McKinney
Sweetwater
Waxahachie

11 times
Brenham
Dumas
Ennis
Gainesville
Highland Park
Jasper

10 times
Cleburne
Edcouch-Elsa
Kerrville Tivy
Mount Pleasant
Uvalde
West Orange-Stark

The longest streak of consecutive years being the official district champ in the 2nd largest classification since the 5 class system was begun in 1951 is Gregory-Portland's 12 consecutive outright district championships from 1969-1980. This is also the UIL state record for consecutive playoff appearances when only 1 team per district qualified. So far, I have only found 2 other teams to have 12 consecutive years as the #1 district seed among all classifications. Other than G-P from 1969-1980, Austin Westlake did it from 1991-2002 (3 years in 4A, 9 years in 5A) and Pilot Point did it from 1979-1990 (1 year in 1A and 11 years in 2A). Houston Yates deserves mention for being outright district champs 16 out of 17 years (1977-1993) with a 2 point loss in 1986 preventing them from claiming all 17 years consecutively.

Didnt Blanco go from R4 to R1? I remember them playing Sonora for state back in 00, and now they are in the same district.

If I am not mistaken, Pilot Point last year after realignment was in District 9 3A in Region II, this year before realignment, the UIL decided to change Pilot Point to District 8 3A in Region I for all sports except football. The UIL did not change the football district, according to what I read, because of 2 year football contract and the difficulty of putting together a schedule mid-realignment. They play in 9 3A, Reg II for football and 8 3A, Reg 1 for all other sports this year only.

So Pilot Point has a chance to change Districts and Regions again next year with the new realignment.

Perhaps the UIL is still unhappy about the law suit a few years ago.

It's funny you should mention that Sonora team Kep. They were ridiculously talented that year. No one gave them much of a game in the playoffs until they finally ran into a team, Blanco, that could match the talent they had. Even then they still almost pulled it off.
