PORT ISABEL — The Port Isabel Tarpons did not wait around for the fourth quarter in their second District 32-3A contest.

The Tarpons (2-0 in 32-3A, 5-2 overall) made quick work of Progreso (0-2, 4-3), defeating the Red Ants 28-3 Friday at Tarpon Stadium.

“Our defense played well and did the little things,” Tarpon coach Monty Stumbaugh said. “We did a good job of containing their running back (Juan Vega).”

The Tarpon defense dominated the game as the Red Ants turned the ball over five times and could muster only 108 total yards. PI’s secondary allowed just 22 passing yards and picked off Progreso quar-terback Mando Garcia four times. Free safety James Delgado led the way with two interceptions.

Tarpon middle linebacker Osiel Perales was all over the field and was a big reason why Vega could only garner 62 yards on 25 carries.

“It was just us misfiring on offense,” Progreso coach Elvis Hernandez said. “We missed too many as-signments and had too many turnovers in the passing game.”

Port Isabel’s RB Nolan Nuñez had no problems getting on track as he finished with 142 rushing yards and three touchdowns on only nine carries.

“He’s explosive. We kept him in check on some carries, but he got away from us,” Hernandez said. “He’s going to do that to any team that he wants to.”

After holding Progreso to three-and-out on their first drive, Nuñez scored from 35 yards out on PI’s first play from scrimmage. Nuñez would add six more on a 13-yard run in the first stanza to make the score 14-0 after a Jaime Salazar extra point.

Nuñez broke free for an 80-yard TD scamper with 4:10 left in the third to cap off his night before Stumbaugh sat him down leading 28-3.

“He’s a tough kid, we’re fortunate that he plays for us,” Stumbaugh said. “The long runs were big. We needed that one in the third when our offense was sputtering.”

It wasn’t all roses for the Tarpons though as they won despite committing several mistakes. Port Isabel fumbled six times giving three away to the Red Ants and finished with 10 penalties for 65 yards.

“We’re fixing to play a good football team (Hidalgo on Oct. 26) and we can’t do these things,” Stum-baugh said. “Hopefully we’ll correct that but we played good enough to win. Progreso’s kids played hard and deserve credit.”

Tarpon running back Diego Garcia rumbled 55 yards to the house on his first carry early in the second quarter to make the score 21-0 with 10:39 left in the first half. He finished with 64 rushing yards and 19 receiving.

Quarterback David Alaniz only threw two passes completing both of them for 32 yards.
