Tough win for the Rockets
Connally fumbles inside the 5 in overtime
roughing the kicker cost them 15 to start OT
w/o that they would have scored before they fumbled

But a win is a win in district

Robinson 1-0
LaVega 1-0
Gatesville 1-0
China 0-1
Connally 0-1
Lorena 0-1

right now Id say

Robinson-LaVega winner 1st
Robinson-LaVega loser 2nd
Connally-China winner 3rd
Connally-China loser 4th
Gatesville 5th
Lorena 6th

Great game for the fans. Both teams missed chances to score. Can't tell if Connally would have scored in the OT because they fumbled. Both, I think, are solid AAA teams. The Rockets had 2 interceptions, a blocked punt, and stopped Connally on 4th and short on Connally's 29 yard line.

Robinson holds off Cadets in OT

By David Kaye

Special to the Tribune-Herald

In a game of missed opportunities, Robinson got the decisive break.

The Rockets outlasted Connally, 21-14, in overtime Friday night at Rocket Field for a crucial win in their District 17-3A opener.

The Rockets (4-2, 1-0) put the pressure on the Cadets (3-3, 0-1) when they opened the overtime with a quick touchdown on two consecutive Keenan Alford runs totaling 25 yards. That pressure grew as a personal foul for roughing the kicker on the converted extra point kick meant Connally would have to start 15 yards farther back on its possession at the 40-yard line.

Eight consecutive runs moved the Cadets down to the 5-yard line, but QB Chris Cobb threw an errant pitch to Dexter Fulbright, and Robinson’s Aaron Williams pounced on the fumble to seal the victory for the Rockets.

It was only fitting that the game would be decided on a turnover inside the 10-yard line, after both teams missed out on easy points by turning the ball over numerous times throughout regulation.

Robinson got things started on the opening drive when they marched 58 yards to the Cadet 5-yard line, but Austin Cleere was tackled in the backfield after a botched snap on a field-goal attempt, and the game remained scoreless.

Leron Harris gave the Rockets another opportunity by intercepting Cobb’s first pass of the game just three plays later. Ruben Martinez got the Rockets on the board this time, as he capped off a 10-play, 35-yard drive with a one-yard TD run.

Cobb answered by marching the Cadets 80 yards in just six plays, and the Connally QB added a 34-yard touchdown run of his own to give the Cadets a chance to tie the game. But Nick Botello’s extra point atttempt sailed wide right, and Robinson led 7-6 heading to the second quarter.

After a Seth Mogavero fumble gave Connally good field position, the Robinson defense forced a three-and-out, and once again, the Rocket offense took advantage of a second chance.

Martinez connected on a 24-yard pass to Mogavero, then scrambled 35 yards to the Cadet 13-yard line before Alford finished off the eight-play, 85-yard drive with runs of eight and five yards to put the Rockets ahead 14-6.

Yet again, Connally answered. Cobb found Jerry Johnson for a 14-yard gain on fourth-and-13 at the Rocket 30-yard line, then five plays later he scrambled in from one yard out for his second touchdown of the night that capped off a 12-play, 73-yard drive. Needing a two-point conversion to tie the game, the Cadets again turned to Cobb, and again he delivered as he fought his way through the Robinson defense and across the goal line.

Both teams traded three-and-outs to start the third quarter, but with Connally forced to punt after another three-and-out, Williams blocked the Chance Hinojosa punt and gave the Rockets great field position at the Cadet 29-yard line. After the Rockets worked their way down to the 6-yard line, Dexter Fulbright stripped the ball from Martinez, and Robinson again came away with no points after having the ball inside the Connally 10-yard line.

On the ensuing drive, Reggie Richardson ran down the sideline for an 85-yard touchdown, but the play was called back on a holding penalty. Despite the penalty, the Cadets had another chance for a touchdown, but Johnson dropped a 38-yard pass from Cobb when his back slammed to the ground in the end zone. Again, the Cadets overcame that mistake and worked their way to the 9-yard line, but they came up empty when Cobb’s pass was intercepted at the goal line by Robert LaFrance.

Robinson would be forced to punt three plays later, but the Rockets got another opportunity when Connally came up short on a fourth-and-two from their own 27-yard line with 6:28 remaining in the game.

After six consecutive runs moved the Rockets within three yards of taking the lead, Mogavero fumbled just short of the goal line, and Connally recovered with 2:50 remaining. It was the third time Robinson came away with no points from inside the Connally 10.

The Cadets marched to the Robinson 44, but came up short on fourth down with two seconds remaining, and the Rockets took a knee to send the game into overtime.

That’s when Alford quickly gave the Rockets the lead, and Williams recovered the Cadet fumble to give Robinson the its district opener.
