Cuero's Whittington steals the show in win

BY MIKE FORMAN - ADVOCATE SPORTS WRITER
October 13, 2007 - Posted at 12:00 a.m.

PALACIOS - Cuero's Quincey Whittington wasn't trying to make a personal statement in the Gobblers' District 29-3A opener but he did.

Whittington rushed for a career-best 256 yards to lead Cuero to a 51-20 win over Palacios on Friday night at Shark Stadium.

"I just wanted to come out and play as a team and see what happened," Whittington said. "I saw where he (Palacios running back Henry Solis) had a lot more yardage but give me a 100 more carries and see what happens. I had something to prove. But we have so many threats we don't just need one guy."

Whittington carried 21 times and had nine runs of more than 10 yards while leading a Cuero rushing attack that produced 23 first downs and 403 yards. The Gobblers did not even attempt a pass in the second half as they bounced back from last week's loss to Bay City and improved to 5-2.

"The old Gobblers ain't dead yet," Cuero coach Mark Reeve said. "We played really hard against a good team. We came into hostile territory and got a big win."

"We know that district is the most important part of the season," Whittington added. "We had to erase that loss and regroup."

Whittington scored on a 60-yard run in the third quarter. He caught one pass for 18 yards and returned two kickoffs for 33 yards, while also playing in the secondary.

"He's a stud," Reeve said. "He came in here with something to prove. Quincey Whittington is quite a player. But you have to give credit to our offensive and defensive lines. If you're going to be successful, you have to dominate the line of scrimmage and we were able to do that."

Cuero punted only once and scored on eight of its 12 possessions, including those that ended the first half and the fourth quarter/ The Gobblers also scored on a pair of 1-yard runs by Jake Rangnow, 2-yard runs by Troy Ruiz and David Williams and a 28-yard run by Stefon Hargrove, who had 97 yards on nine carries. Rangnow picked up a fumbled snap and ran 3 yards for Cuero's final touchdown and Jonathan Perez added a 31-yard field goal on the Gobblers' first possession.

"They're not just good, they're great," Palacios coach Mike Treybig said. "They've got a great program. I was pleased with the way we played in the first half. We continued to battle back. But we had a difficult time stopping their offense."

Solis, the area's leading rusher, had 123 yards on 23 carries and scored on runs of 65 and 2 yards while adding four catches for 67 yards. Cody Smith caught a 64-yard touchdown pass from David Hunt in the second quarter when the Sharks (5-2) did all their scoring, but they still trailed 30-20 at halftime.

"I thought we played with a lot of intensity," Reeve said. "We kind of lost it in the second quarter on defense. But we talked to the kids about it at halftime and they came out and did a great job. The thing is we're finally getting in shape. The weather was good and the kids played hard. It was a good day for us."

The Gobblers took control by driving 67 yards to start the third quarter to set up Williams' touchdown run. Whittington got into the end zone after taking a pitch from quarterback Tyler Arndt at the Cuero 40, cutting back and out-running a group of Palacios defenders.

"Lord, lord, lord," Treybig said of Whittington. "He's a special kind of kid."

No doubt,

Quincey showed up last night, stole the show from Solis, doubled up Solis' yards on two less carries

A little sloppy at times, just need to avoid a careless week next friday against Yoakum, take our bye the next week, and then see what Gonzales has to bring
