THE FIRST HALF

Staff writer Danny Davis' look back to the first weeks of the regular season:

BEST GAME

SEPT. 27: LEANDER 37, PFLUGERVILLE 36

Leander's Steve Gideon has beaten Pflugerville six times in his seven years as Lions coach, but he had to sweat a little bit for his latest victory. The regionally televised Thursday night game nearly went to overtime, but Pflugerville missed an extra-point attempt with 46 seconds left.

Good ones:Austin High 27, Westlake 24 (Sept. 28); Round Rock 17, Bowie 14 (Sept. 7); Belton 47, Shoemaker 45 (Oct. 5).

THREE QUESTIONS

1. Who has been Central Texas' best quarterback so far?

McCallum's Kevin Lusson, who has thrown for 899 yards and 14 touchdowns. Lusson, whose stats may have to do with playing Johnston and Reagan the past three weeks, will get to a chance to prove himself against LBJ and Manor.

2. What's been the key to Stony Point's turnaround?

Its offense, which can punish teams on the ground or in the air. The Tigers have a player in the top three among Central Texas Class 5A players in passing (Nykolas Mckissic), rushing (Ryan Nunn) and receiving (Seth Patterson).

3. What's wrong with Wimberley?

The Texans can attribute a portion of their 1-5 start to a nondistrict schedule that included losses to No. 1-ranked Giddings and No. 2 Liberty Hill. And the offense that returned only two starters is scoring less than 20 points a game.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS

1. Blake Gideon, Leander

Gideon has established himself as a major force on both sides of the ball. With two interceptions, he put on a defensive showcase in Leander's 30-12 win in the Texas Football Classic. When he's the Leander quarterback, he averages more than 12 yards a carry, including touchdown runs of 49 and 78 yards.

2. R.P. Stuart, Anderson

Stuart has only 16 catches, but he is making them count. Going into tonight's game against Westlake, Stuart is averaging a ridiculous 26.2 yards per catch and has three touchdowns. He has put up impressive statistics in his running game too, averaging 6.7 yards a carry with four touchdowns.

3. Xavier Canto, Caldwell

The Hornets are 4-0 in part because of Canto's 11.7 average yards per carry and his eight touchdowns.

WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT

HOT: Omasha Brantley, LBJ

Brantley has rushed for 498 yards and 10 TDs in his last three games. However, all three of those games have been in District 17-4A,

NOT: District 17-4A

The bottom four teams in the district have combined for one win, and Johnston might not play another official game this season.

HOT: Andre Smith, Shoemaker

Smith is a textbook definition of a double threat, throwing for 928 yards and running for 521.

NOT: New Braunfels Canyon

The Cougars won last week to push to 2-3, a far cry from the 7-3 team last year.

HOT: Lanham Bass, St. Michael's

Although he plays for a private school, Bass is fourth among all Central Texas receivers with 27 catches.

NOT: Defensive schemes against Giddings, Liberty Hill

Here's a hint: They're going to run the ball. The 3A powerhouses, both 5-0, have combined for 3,552 rushing yards and 47 touchdowns while they have passed for only a combined 333 yards. How do teams not stop this?

THE SECOND HALF

Staff writer Rick Cantu's look forward to the final weeks of the regular season:

BEST GAME

DEC. 7: GIDDINGS VS. LIBERTY HILL

The state's No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams aren't in the same district, so they'd have to meet in the state quarterfinals for the second straight year. It's a safe bet they'll get through their first three playoff games. Liberty Hill won last year's playoff game, a major step in its drive to the Class 3A Division II state championship.

Three other good ones:Stony Point at Leander, Oct. 19; Connally at Lake Travis, Oct. 26; Caldwell at Giddings, Oct. 26

THREE QUESTIONS

1. What Central Texas team has the best chance to win state?

Copperas Cove. The Bulldawgs lost a 40-28 decision to Alamo Heights in last year's Class 4A Division I state title game at the Alamodome. With Robert Griffin back at QB, No. 1-ranked Cove is determined to win it all this year.

2. What team is playing well that might be going unnoticed?

Caldwell. The Hornets (4-0) are one of the area's most surprising teams. They dismantled highly respected Hutto 49-21 last week behind running back Xavier Canto's 233 yards. Their only drawback is being in the same district as Giddings.

3. Is Stony Point for real?

Judging from last week's 33-15 demolition of Round Rock, the answer is a resounding yes. And Craig Chessher is a viable coach of the year candidate for Central Texas.

DIFFERENCE MAKERS

1. Davis Collins, Austin High

The Maroons are stocked with plenty of talent without Collins, the tailback who missed most of the first half of the season with a high ankle sprain. But the addition of a running back who had 1,300 yards and 15 TDs last year will make Austin High a dangerous playoff team.

2. Nykolas Mckissic, Stony Point

The Tigers have one of the area's top running backs in Ryan Nunn, who rushed for 252 yards last week against Round Rock. But what makes Stony Point formidable is Mckissic, the quarterback who keeps the offense diverse by averaging 216 yards passing.

3. Jason Bird, Lake Travis

Despite missing the first game for breaking a team rule, Bird is the leading receiver in Central Texas with 42 catches for 466 yards. He has become Garrett Gilbert's primary receiver on a team with many good offensive weapons.

WHO'S IN, WHO'S OUT

Our picks for the playoffs:

DISTRICT 14-5A

1. Leander

2. Stony Point

3. Pflugerville

4. Cedar Park

In Central Texas' most competitive district, Leander — the two-time defending champ — remains the team to beat. Leander and Stony Point would be the Division I playoff teams.

DISTRICT 25-5A

1. Austin High

2. Westlake

3. Bowie

4. San Marcos

After knocking off Westlake two straight years, the Maroons must forget about the Chaparrals and aim for something more important — the playoffs. Westlake and Bowie would go Division I.

DISTRICT 17-4A

1. LBJ

2. McCallum

3. Travis

The district's game of the year is tonight. Can LBJ put an end to McCallum's 23-game district winning streak? Regardless, LBJ will go Division I.

DISTRICT 25-4A

1. Lake Travis

2. Connally

3. Marble Falls

No 25-4A team can match the Cavaliers' offensive weapons. QB Garrett Gilbert, WR Jason Bird and RB Chris Aydem give Lake Travis diversity and big-play ability. Connally remains the Division I representative.

DISTRICT 26-4A

1. New Braunfels

2. Hays

3. Del Valle

The unbeaten Unicorns have a habit of winning every close game. But they'd better be careful with Hays coming to town tonight. Del Valle would go Division I.

DISTRICT 18-3A

1. Liberty Hill

2. Cameron Yoe

3. Hutto

The Panthers are about as strong a lock as you can find to win district. Hutto would go Division I.

DISTRICT 23-3A

1. Giddings

2. Caldwell

3. La Grange

The key to this district race is Navasota. If the Rattlers miss the playoffs, then Giddings would go Division I — which means the Buffaloes would avoid Liberty Hill (and vice versa) altogether and compete for a separate state title.

DISTRICT 25-3A

1. Wimberley

2. Llano

3. Bandera

The Texans still get the nod even with their poor start. Bandera would go Division I.

DISTRICT 25-2A

1. Salado

2. Rogers

3. Florence

Troy also will factor into this district race. Regardless, Salado would be the big-school team.

Interesting how they pick a Giddings/Liberty Hill rematch on Dec 7 in the 4th round of the D2 playoffs (wonder if they set a time and location yet??) being the big game of the second half of the season and then in their District 23 predictions have Giddings going D1 (La Grange finishing 3rd in district beating out Navasota with no mention of Bellvile)!

Talk about contradicting themselves!!

They're just covering all bases. That way, no matter which way it ends up, they can say "Seeeeeeeee, we told you". ;)
