GO TEXANS. A Snyder Tiger, Jack Spikes, was the MVP of the 1962 AFL championship game when the Texans (now the Kansas City Chiefs) won their first world championship.

Right you are Snydertigersrul. The Dallas Texans were to move the Kansas City in 1963 because the City chose the Cowboys instead of them. 1962 was a great year for the Texans as they had Hank Stram as coach but they got Lenny Dawson as their QB and he was to lead them to a great super bowl win in a few years when they were at Kansas City. Other great backs for the Texans were Abner Haynes and Curtis McClinton (rookie of the year in 1962). On defense they had two great linebackers Sherrill Hendrick (of TCU) and E.J. Hollub (of Texas Tech).

The Dallas Texans met the Houston Oilers for the AFL Championship in Houston in 1962. Houston had won the first two AFL Championships in 1960 and 1961 (the first two years). They were led by the great QB George Blanda.
This game was a tale of two halves. Dallas won the first one 17 to 0 but Houston came back the second half to get it to a tie 17 to 17. In fact on the last play of the game from the 50 yard line Blanda threa a long pass to the end zone to win but it was incomplete.
The game went into sudden death overtime which meant that the team that scores first wins. It was a windy game but due to a mixup Dallas chose to kick and of course Houston took the wind. Dallas was able to hold them out and then got the ball in the second quarter of overtime and drove down deep in Houston territory. Tommy Booker was an end for the Texans but he was also a kicker (back then teams had a player that did the kicking and punting - there were no extra positions for them like now). Booker lined up to kick a 25 yard field goal to win the game. He wasn't worried at all because the ball was in the middle of the field and the wind was at his back. Still McClinton his teammate gave him a worried look and Tommy assured him "Don't worry! It's over." True to his word he kicked it straight and the Texans were AFL champions. Up to this point this was the longest pro football game ever played.

The Dallas Cowboys were originally called the Steers and then the Rangers, but switched to the Cowboys for before their first game.
