This is the first movie ever and it is only a few seconds. It was made by Thomas Edison in 1894 who was filming one of his employees. This was the beginning. What was to follow were such great films as Gone With the Wind, North by Northwest, The Sound of Music, Titanic, The Departed, etc.

This was the humble beginning. I am sure you are awed from seeing this great historic few seconds which was to start many many many great movies. Awesome indeed!

Below is the entire movie The Great Train Robbery made in 1903. This was one of the first movies to have a plot lasting more than a few minutes and was the start of many great westerns. It was actually filmed in New Jersey! Bronco Billy Anderson who was to be a big western star has several roles including the wounded train passenger, the bullied dancer and one of the bandits. The plot is easy to follow. Remember this movie was made when sound wasn't discovered in the movies but there is some good background music. The last five seconds of the movie is devastating even though it is just an add on for shock value and not part of the plot. If you haven't seen it before you are about to be in for a treat. Remember this was in 1903 and when the ending was shown many people hit the floor and ran out of the theatre and some even shot at the screen. Enjoy!

Below is the short movie version of A Day in the Life of an American Fireman in 1903. Remember they didn't have sound in the movies back then. The movies were to develope into longer ones and in the big city theatres they would have orchasters playing background music. In small cities they would have a pianist playing the background music and most small town theatres often just showed the movies without any background music which didn't seem to worry the theatre goers. In fact movie houses were very noisy and people would yell and whistle but no one minded as long as they didn't get too rowdy. This was because movies were silent and would have writing when needed to show the narratives or conversations. In 1928 beginning with the movie The Jazz Singer sound in movies as we know it began. And the rest is history. Still it is interesting to remember these pioneering movies at the time.

These are scenes from the great 1928 Comedy starring Charlie Chaplin. Charlie has been mistake for a pick pocket and the police are after him as is the real pick pocket. This is very funny. Be sure to watch for the very funny scene at about the 2 minutes mark. Hilarious indeed. :)
