These were very funny movies made mostly in the 50s. They were very popular too.
Ma and Pa Kettle are rural country mountain people that live in the State Of Washington. They have many funny advantures and were great.

Marjarine Main played Ma Kettle and she was great in this role. She received one oscar nominations for best supporting actress in The Egg and I and many felt should have got another one in the Gary Cooper/Dorothy McGuire movie Friendly Persuasion. She also appeared in many other movies and was good in them even though she is most often thought as Ma Kettle.

Percy kilbride played Pa Kettle and he was terrific. He was in many state productions and movies but Pa Kettle is what he is remembered for.

The Ma And Pa Kettle characters were introduced in the 1947 Claudette Colbert/Fred MacMurray comedy The Egg and I. Marjarine Main was nominated as best supporting actress. The movie is mainly a comedy about a city couple moving to the country (Claudette and Fred). The Kettles are not the main characters even though they are in the movie. But enough interest was shown in their characters that they were to have their own movies. In 1948 Marjarie and Percy apppeared in the very funny Donald O'Connor movie Feudin', Fussin' and A-Fightin'.
However they did not play the Kettles in this movie.

1. In 1949 they finally made the first Kettle movie Ma and Pa Kettle. It was an instant hit and more were to come. These were not long movies and lasted about 75 minutes each but they were well made and were hits. Ma and Pa Kettle had many kids that ranged in infants to fully grown. Ma was famous for calling the kids to Dinner with "Come and Get it!"

2. Ma and Pa Kettle Go to Town made in 1950.

3. Ma and Pa Kettle Back on the Farm in 1951.

4. Ma and Pa Kettle at the Fair in 1952

5. Ma and Pa Kettle on Vacation in 1953.

6. Ma and Pa Kettle at Home in 1954.

7. Ma and Pa Kettle at Waikiki in 1955. Sadly Percy Kilbride left the series and retired which was a big loss to the series even though they made two more movies.

There were two other Kettle movies but it was didnt' have Ma and Pa Kettle. One was in 1956 The Kettles in the Ozards in which Ma and most of the kids go to the Ozarks to visit an uncle played by Authur Hunnicutt with the explination that Pa stayed home to take care of the farm. In 1957 they made the last Kettle movie The Kettles on Old MacDonald's Farm in which Parker Fennelly played Pa. Hunnicutt and Fennelly were both good actors and did a good job but Kilbride was sorely missed.

These movies will hopefully be shown on television soon. They have been shown many times and are worth seeing.

Below is a very funny link from one of their movies with Ma Kettle (Marjarine Main) and Pa Kettle (Percy Kilbride). It is just called The Math Problem. Hilarious!
