PLANO, Texas (October 4, 2007) – Six great young Texas high school football stars have been recognized today as the Built Ford Tough/Dallas Cowboys Texas High School Football Players of the Week for Week 4.

The Built Ford Tough/Dallas Cowboys Texas High School Football Player of the Week program honors one student-athlete in six of the state’s athletic classifications every week during the high school football regular season for his accomplishments on and off the field. The award was launched for the 2006 season to celebrate the strong ties between Texans and high school football, as well as Ford’s recognition as the “Truck Line of Texas” for an unprecedented seventh consecutive year. This year, the program was expanded to include America’s Team: The Dallas Cowboys.

Following are capsule summaries of the Week 4 winners:

Class 5A: Blake Gideon is Leander’s go-to guy on both sides of the ball. In Week 4’s outstanding 37-36 win over Pflugerville, Gideon made 15 tackles, forced a fumble, had an interception, blocked an extra point and, with the game tied at 30-30, took over at QB and promptly ran 78 yards for the winning touchdown. He finished with 101 rushing yards. The UT-bound Gideon, who also runs track for Leander, is part of PALS, the Peer Assistance Leadership group (PALS) that serves everyone from senior citizens to elementary school youngsters. “Blake is as unselfish as they come,” says his proud Coach (and father) Steve Gideon. “He doesn’t require the spotlight and is extremely dedicated to whatever he does, on and off the field.”

Class 4A: Jeramie Marek, Calallen’s Senior Quarterback and Cornerback, rushed for 215 yards on 15 carries and scored three touchdowns and hit on nine of 20 passes for another 173 yards despite playing only three-quarters of a 51-12 victory over Gregory-Portland. In addition to his 401 all-purpose yards, he also picked off a pair of passes. The 5-10, 165-pound Marek, a star on the Wildcats baseball team as well, owns a 4.3 GPA on a five-point system. “Jeramie is a gifted athlete and a natural born leader,” says Coach Phil Danaher. “He leads through his positive attitude and is always encouraging his teammates and schoolmates. We lost a three-year starter last season and he has stepped right in and done a great job.”

Class 3A: When Van’s Quarterback went down with an injury two weeks ago, Senior Running Back Jermie Calhoun shifted to QB and hasn’t missed a beat. In the Vandals’ 47-22 win over Kemp, Jermie rushed 27 times for 336 yards and six touchdowns and completed six of nine passes for another 93 yards. The Oklahoma-bound Calhoun is a 3.4 GPA student who participates in the reading mentors program for elementary school youngsters and is active with the FCA and the First Baptist Church—and still finds time to play basketball and run track. “I can’t say enough about him,” says Coach Brady Pennington. “He’s an outstanding kid and an incredible person who certainly leads by example. He’s always quick to praise his teammates and, despite his talents, is never selfish.”

Class 2A: The starting Quarterback at Reagan County since the middle of his Sophomore season, Senior Brandon Davenport gets it done with the legs and his arms. The Owls beat Junction 44-24 as Brandon rushed 16 times for 170 yards and two TDs and completed eight of 16 passes for another 175 yards. Davenport, who also plays basketball and runs track, may be even better in the classroom, where his 3.86 GPA ranks him number seven in his graduating class. A member of Mu Alpha Theta and the National Honor Society, he also serves on the student council. “Brandon is our leader,” says Coach Glen Dunnam. “The kids really look up to him. He has a tremendous work ethic, both on the field and in the classroom. And he’s terrific with the younger players, especially the up-and-coming Quarterbacks.”

Class 1A: Junior Marlon McClure does everything for Tenaha except run the concession stand at halftime—and that’s probably because no one has ever asked. The Running Back/Wide Receiver/Free Safety ran 16 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns and caught eight passes for 117 yards and three more scores in a crucial 36-29 victory over Shelbyville. An all-regional basketball player and two-event qualifier in the regional track meet, Marlon also sports a 3.0 GPA. “He’s a dynamic athlete who can take a simple play and turn it into a huge play,” says Coach Scott Tyner. “In the toughest situations, he’s always there to pick us up. And with his five interceptions so far this year, he’s also kept our opponents out of our end zone.”

Private Schools: Though he’s only 5-7 and 165 pounds, Senior Running Back Seth Hanna of San Antonio Central Catholic is the Buttons’ best blocking back. But he’s even better when he carries the ball. Hanna led Central to a 37-13 victory over Uvalde in Week 4, running the ball 15 times for 168 yards and three touchdowns to keep his team undefeated. Seth, who also plays baseball, carries a 3.3 GPA and is heavily involved with youth sports camps. “It’s no surprise that his teammates voted him captain,” says Coach Carlos Enrico. “He’s quiet but he’s also a great leader. Seth gives 100% in everything he does, on and off the field. He’s a small guy with a huge heart.”
