Rockies start the inning with a lead off double. Hoffman doesn't appear to be very sharp.

Hit gave Holladay the NL batting title and RBI lead for the year.

he missed the plate

if there was replay the play would stand - there was never a view where you could see with 100% certainty that he missed the plate .... no view saw him touch the plate, but thats not good enough

It looked like he was blocked off the plate and since he cut his hand on the catchers spike he probably did but, the Rockies had a home run earlier that hit a chair and bounced back into play that was missed. Both plays were very hard to distinguish in real time and still open for dispute after replay.

yeah...I watched it a zillion times before going to bed, and the best that I came up with was that on the replays, as he's sliding in, there is dirt on the plate afterward...it could have gotten there by the slide, but it looks like he might have caught it with his pinky as he was getting a face plant. I'll give the ump the benefit of the doubt since he was three feet away.

3afan, didn't you think that the umpire had plenty of time to have gotten on the third base side of the plate to have been in a better postion to have seen the tag?

I'll let him answer for sure, but to me it looked like a tough call...

Let's say he does go over to the other side of the bag, then Holliday slides around the tag and Barrett then has to do a sweep tag over the plate...then you're totally out of position to see what happens behind the players...I figure he was in the best spot to have the best chance at seeing the most plays.

I don't' know what the taught mechanic is for baseball ......... for fastpitch softball the (trained) umpire would have been in foul territory just up the 3rd baseline a bit (5-6 ft), that gives you a good angle but no matter where you are there is a chance you can be shielded just depending on how the play unfolds

but, he called safe and nothing I saw in a reply showed 100% otherwise
