Football: District 1-3A action gets under way

There will be a different look tonight when the District 1-3A schedule gets under way.

Instead of Monahans (1-2 overall) rolling everyone in sight and preparing to storm to another district title like last year, the Loboes are going through some struggles and the El Paso-area schools have all improved.

Fort Stockton (3-1) is off to a strong start coming off of a trip to the playoffs and Pecos is showing signs of life now by getting injured players back.

Tonight, though, all the conjecture stops and the road to the playoffs begins with three games — Fabens (3-1) at Fort Stockton at 7:30 p.m., Pecos (0-4) at Anthony (4-0) at 8:30 p.m. CDT and Clint (3-1) at Tornillo (3-0) at 8:30 p.m. CDT.

Monahans has the district bye and plays Graham (4-0) at Abilene’s McMurry University at 7:30 p.m.

“I still put Monahans as the favorite,” Pecos head coach Chris Henson said, “they are playing a heavy schedule, but I think you have to give a lot of respect to the El Paso teams in our district.”

While none of the Permian Basin teams seem to be overlooking the El Paso schools, it is difficult to gauge how good they are because none of the teams play common opponents.

“It is hard to tell,” Fort Stockton head coach Tom Howard said. “Those teams out there are just so inconsistent, it is nearly impossible to get a feel on any of them.

“That is a distinct advantage they have being out there by themselves, it is just unknown.”
What is known is Anthony has yet to allow a point this season, Fabens and Tornillo are much improved and Clint, while less experienced, is coming off a trip to the playoffs.

“The El Paso schools are better,” Henson said. “(Anthony) Coach (Gary) Rundell is downplaying what they are doing because they aren’t playing West Texas teams, but they are getting better and we have to go down there ready to play.”

Most 1-3A coaches feel like the district as a whole is steps ahead of last season.

“It is definitely one of those things where anything can happen at any time,” Fabens head coach Mike Martinez said, “and you hope you have a little luck on your side.

“But Monahans is Monahans. They are struggling because of the caliber of teams they are playing. You can’t ever underestimate a Mickey Owens-coached team.”
