Yeah I saw it! It was really bad our boys couldn't hang on to the ball. Andrews captilized on it and beat the crap out of us. Andrews appears to be coming back to the team they used to be. Snyder will have their hands full in district play.

September 22, 2007: Mustangs run over Monahans

ANDREWS -- The Andrews football team made a giant statement on Friday to prove it is one of the best Class 3A area football programs, if not the best, after Week 3 of the high school football season.

Michael Reid rushed for 146 yards and four touchdowns and the Mustangs came up with five turnovers, three of them off kickoff returns, as Andrews rolled to a convincing 41-13 victory over Monahans at the Mustang Bowl.

Andrews, which improved to 4-0 and broke a two-game losing streak to the Loboes, rose up in all three phases of the game, especially on defense where the Mustangs held Monahans to 189 total yards.

"It feels good," said Reid, the Mustang senior tailback and linebacker. "Our team did really well together. Our offense was clicking on all cylinders, while on defense, our coaches were putting us in great position to make tackles."

Monahans, which fell to 1-2, is left searching for answers as the mistakes that were made the week before in a loss to Midland Christian carried over into Friday night against a very hungry and much improved Andrews team.

Monahans actually avoided a couple of potential disasters early. The Loboes fumbled the opening kickoff but Andrews couldn't capitalize as the Mustangs missed a 40-yard field goal attempt.

Then later in the first quarter, Andrews blocked a Monahans punt and took over at the Loboes' 23. But once again, Andrews came up empty as the Mustangs turned the ball over on downs.

With Andrews failing to take advantage of Monahans miscues, the Loboes were the first to cash in after an 11-play, 80-yard drive as Steven Valles found Tanner Owens for a 27-yard touchdown pass with 11:53 left in the second quarter for a 6-0 lead.

Monahans' defense kept the Loboes in the game in the first half and did not allow Andrews to gain a first down until the second quarter. The Mustangs' offense, however, finally got something going later in the quarter when a 44-yard run by Eric Kelton and a 13-yard pass from Kelton to David Criswell helped to set up a 5-yard TD run by Kelton. With the extra point by Corey Lee, the Mustangs took a 7-6 lead with 2:17 left before the half.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Loboes once again fumbled the ball, this time at their own 25-yard line. Two plays later, Reid broke free for a 21-yard rushing touchdown to give Andrews the 14-6 advantage into the locker room.

"That was big for us," said Reid about taking the momentum at the half. "We knew that (Monahans) could come back at any time no matter how much we were up, so we knew we had to keep running at them (in the second half)."

Andrews carried the momentum into the second half as Kelton hit Reid for a 12-yard TD pass. The score was set up with a 66-yard pass from Kelton to a wide open Landon Minatra.

It would only get worse for the Loboes as they fumbled their third kickoff return at their own 35. Six plays later, Kelton scampered 9 yards for the score and 28-6 lead.

"(The Loboes) have a great kickoff return and what we didn't want them to do was set their kickoff return up," Andrews coach Blaine Springston said. "What we were doing is what we call pooch kick where we kick it high in the air so they can't get the return on it. They just weren't fielding it."

After Monahans turned the ball over on downs on the ensuing possession, Reid made it 34-6 when he broke several tackles for a 41-yard TD run.

"He ran like a bull tonight," said Springston about Reid's performance.

Springston said the Loboes were taking away the perimeter early in the game but the Mustang offense eventually wore the Monahans defense down with their quick snaps.

"We started our what we call our NASCAR series where we just run in plays as fast as we can," Springston said. "(The Loboes) got gassed in a hurry and then we started to run inside on them and then it opened everything up after that."

Kelton finished the game with 128 yards passing to 96 yards rushing for the Mustangs. He also accounted for two touchdowns.

Hmmm....5 turnovers - 3 of which were kick off returns. That had to hurt. Sounds like the Sweetwater/Decatur game last year. Monahans needed to call for the fair catch.
