The Hondo Owls defeated the 4A Uvalde Coyotes on Friday night 21-7 in the 92nd meeting between the two teams. Hondo now holds a 48-41-3 edge in the series. Is there another rivalry between a 3A school and an opponent that has lasted longer? The Hondo vs Uvalde rivalry dates back to 1912.

it's nowhere near as long, but celina and pilot point have had a fairly storied rivalry (9 state titles between them)

Sherman-Denison began in 1906 but some games were not played because of WW's and such.

I wanna say El Campo/Bay City is the state's longest in any classification, but I forget. I know it was one of EC's rivals, but that's not 3A.

You know AP/Ingleside go way back, but not as far as Cuero/Yoakum... (the 30's maybe).... I will still try to post it, if I can get it.

I used to have the entire series saved to my computer, along with a bunch of the write-ups from the Caller-Times and Progress dating back to the 30's. Virus wiped it out, though. :(

The series actually goes back to the 20's (exact date unknown... I couldn't find info before the late-20's), but there was such a huge size difference in the schools that they didn't play every year. Back then, AP's primary similar-sized rivals were Sinton and Rockport while Ingleside's was Woodsboro. But according to the papers, the games were still very heated even though AP was much larger than Ingleside.

If I remember correctly, Ingleside first fielded a football team in '21 (I could be very off on that info, though). We were tiny back then, though, just basically a fishing town with three huge ranches and a couple of big wineries all operated by just a handful of families. Some refineries moved into town sometime early in the century, though, and the school grew enough to where they could field an 11-man football team. Those refineries moved out during the depression, though, and Ingleside began to decline.

When the Humble Refinery moved into Ingleside in the 40's, the town got a shot in the arm as far as the economy and population, and really started growing. The AP/Ingleside rivalry kind of went the way the growth of Ingleside went. We played a few times early on, then when Ingleside fell on hard times and the population dried up the games became less-common, then when the refinery showed up the series became more consistent. After Ingleside grew to a 1A school (it used to be a Class B school), the series with AP pretty much became an every-year thing. It's been played continuously every year since the early 50's. (And I may be wrong on some of these facts... haven't seen this info in three or four years.)

Ingleside and AP were finally put into the same classification and same district sometime in the mid- to late-70's. The intensity that was already there before they were paired up in district only grew. I'm sure you have some stories from high school. My freshman year, IHStangFan's senior year, was the year of that huge pasture fight. That was a melee.

I might still have something laying around. I have a ton of random papers filed away with some obscure HS football facts on them. I'll see if I can't find anything about the rivalry.

LOL...tons of stories. For those that don't know, I went to school in Ingleside, but have lived in Aransas Pass for many years now and have/had 3 kids in the APISD.

Anyway, one of the best things I personally remember contributing to was a huge sign that said "Panthers eat (horse) $h*#"... which was then put across the entire length of their press box. It unfortunately backfired when AP's coach hung it in the boys lockerroom for inspiration.

Then there was always the blue dye and bubbles in the fountain on the AP Boulevard.;) That was a yearly event.

I will try to post some of those old games/scores. I know they recently came out in the fall sports guide.

Well Celina and Pilot Point have been at it for a while. We are only 12 miles apart. GA Moore was a PP graduate(how would you like PP on your letter jacket) and so is current coach Butch Ford. The games began in 1935 and it has always been a good matchup. Pilot Point is the last team to beat Celina at home in week 7 of 98 which coincidentally was the last loss for 68 games.
Great rivalry with both schools having titles. Pilot Point racked up two in the early 80's and Celina had our run as well. One of the top rivalries in the state as both schools have grown and we have been the same classifications most of the time.

Ingleside and AP is a longstanding rivalry but the rivalries AP has had with both Sinton and Taft go back even further.

Sinton and AP have met 76 times (will be #77 when they play this year).

Taft and AP faced each other 75 times up through their last matchup in '03. From 1953-2003 they met every single year for 51 consecutive seasons.

A..because it is likely the number will change as far as what district it is

B. There is a good chance SOME movement will happen

BUT anyone talking now about moving districts are only speculating, non one knows anything until the day it is released.

Time to change that!

Thanks again WOS87, interesting stuff. I knew Sinton went way back, but really had no idea that we played Taft on such a regular basis.
