Black and White
(Under age 40?You won't understand.)

You could hardly see for all the snow,

Spread the rabbit ears as far as they go.

Pull a chair up to the TV set,

"Good Night, David. Good Night, Chet."

My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.

My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat it raw sometimes, too.
Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice-pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e-coli.

Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.

The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.

We all took gym, not PE and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.

Flunking gym was not an option... even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.

Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.

We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything.

I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.

I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.

Oh yeah... and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!

We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked.

Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.

We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got our butt spanked there and then we got our butt spanked again when we got home.

I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.

To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that?

We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?

LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA, AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T- SORRY FOR WHAT YOU MISSED. I WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING!

Pass this to someone and remember that life's most simple pleasures are very often the best.

I know this is a football site, but I figured with all the stabs taken at each other today this would be refreshing. Especially, if your over 40, this really hits home.

I know it was a long time ago, but you could actually fail a class and even worse you could fail a grade. For those of you who are wondering, example: you fail the 10th grade, you repeat the 10th grade the next year. Would'nt this be great now, oh but heaven forbid, that might hurt someone's feelings if they failed in our school system today. It may damage them for life.

We had hi-top Chucks, not Keds. Dug tunnels in the woods. Climbed trees. Camped out in real woods. Stole pears off a neighbor lady's tree. Had pear wars with stoles pears.

searched through the neighbors garbage for bottles so we could return them to the store for money and buy candy......and if we couldn't return the bottles, we collected bugs and spiders in 'em.

And for us in sports it was NO PASS, NO NOTHING!!!! We had to take grade sheets around to each of our teachers every week and have them sign that we were passing. If not, we didn't suit out. And then the next week we ran our butts til we dropped.

Our parents never thought twice if we got our butts paddled at school. Some of the coaches would light you up.

Did anyone get any of those suade Converse All-Stars? We all went out and got the green ones for basketball season. We thought we were little Havliceks and Boston Celtics.

Suede??? Wow, that's high class. We got white. Period. We also had Converse track shoes. OMG! Those were the u.g.l.i.e.s.t. things with their pointed-up toes.

One my kids just don't quite understand - my sister and i would eagerly await from year to year the one night that, usually sunday, that the wizard of oz would come on tv. I was around 15 when i found out that the movie changed to color in munchkin land, had b/w tv until about age 15.

The good ole Converse shoes. We wore those for basketball, and low tops I might add. In my high school you were, well you know!, if you wore high tops.

Since we only had one pair for both practice and games the coach would remind us to take them home and wash them in the washing machine so we would have better traction.

Like I said last week and was ridiculed for saying so. This game is Graham's superbowl and is just another game for Wylie.

If you can't help it and it means that much to you, I must have been right.

  We had high tops. And had to wash them at home, too. In high school, Adidas came along (white with black stripes) and you were "way cool" if you had them. :D

Oh, wow- he's back. And after I just complemented you for being so nice after being so mean last week.
I just thought it was funny, was all. It was a HUGE win for Graham, I have admitted that and admit that now. I was ecstatic that we beat those guys. But if you think Wylie losing to Graham was just another game to them you are seriously mistaken my friend.
Let it die- I was just having a chuckle.

Never wanted to come across mean, and really don't remember saying anything mean. Don't really want to rehash it either. And I can asure you that losing to Graham didn't hurt any worst than losing to Brownwood or anybody else on our schedule. In fact the game the really hurt the most was the Wimberely game last year. My son is a senior this year but I have watch very closely for the last 12 years. It seems like everybody on our schedule circles the Wylie game before the year starts as the one game they really want to win. Our kids are used to playing in games like that where the other team is giving it their absolute best shot. Coach Sandifer does an absolute tremendous job of keeping our kids focused on the big picture. Losing any game hurts, but coach Sandifer will use this game to his advantage down the road. Their were some weaknesses that were exposed last Friday night and since its just week three, He has time to fix them. Better now than week 12.

Like I said earlier, I was impressed with Graham, especially their defense. I would love for the two teams to play again down the road but that is almost impossible. Graham is the third biggest team in their district which means Iowa Park would have to make the playoffs and both WF Hirschi and Burkburnett would both have to miss the playoffs. Never the less, I apologize if I came across as being somewhat mean, I'm not a hater in any way, the McCoys are very good personal friends of mine. Coach McCoy and I were groomsman in each others weddings for heavens sakes, so I'm very qualified to my opinions of him. I have never said anything on this board that I have not already said to him face to face before. He's a good man and a good coach.

Oh well, I know your post said let it die, but I felt like and explanation was needed to clear things up.

Now that that's out of the way ... what was that show about the astronauts who went back in time to the dinosaur days. It had a catchy little jingle
"It's about time
It's about space ...something something something."

I don't know but it had a kid named Will and those weird breathing martian looking.... "land of the lost"......

Maybe not- they weren't astronauts, they were just regular folks- like the Brady's.....

MarginalTalent

Maybe that's it. It came on the same night as The Green Hornet and Land of the Giants. The all had awesome old school special effects. Now that I look back on it, those may have been the worst shows ever, but I'd rather watch them than American Idol or any of these "reality" shows.
