Liberty Hill is going to have to learn how to play ball in the first half this week if they are going to have a chance at Cuero.

Cuero can do it all this year. The sophomore makes some silly throws though, LH will probably jump on that.
At the same time, Cuero's Defense was pretty solid this year too.
Should be good.

This is gonna be huge. I really hate to have to pick a winner in this one. On one side you have the defending state champ, and on the other you have one of the best teams in Reg IV. I will have to mediate on this for a while.

It may not be a score fest, LH defense is the best I have seen in the 4 seasons Ive been watching. They give up a little early and then just bring the beat down, course the Cuero speed will be a good test. Should be another great game, both teams will be tested. Cuero better have a chin, which they usually do.

Silly throws? He only had to throw 5 times all night against the Bandera D.and was 3 for those 5........for 100 plus yards.

When Coach Reeve first got here in '03 he was quoted as saying he wanted the players to "play like their hair is on fire"... now we've had some damn good teams, and some of the players have played like their hair is on fire, but this year it seems the whole team does... that's very good and about time...

talent-wise and heart-wise Cuero's gunna hang with LH all the way, more than last year... this team seems more "together", they've grown a lot since those first scrimmages and even the first game.... but LH is a champ, and maybe they're gunna try to get revenge for the loss to Cuero last year...

I say LH by 3... just because they're LH... but if they make a couple of mistakes early on this may be like the '05 playoff result because this Cuero team is playing like their hair is on fire...

well many changes have taken place since the LG scrimmage...

this defense is better built to stop LH than last year's was, and we didn't have a problem then with LH...

I think this is another 37-34 type game...

but Cuero CAN score... so we'll see...

Cuero defense will go crazy and dominate the game b/c LH will have to hurry it up to catch up........reminiscent of the 05' playoff meeting

Y'all just GOTTA keep bringing up the '05 playoff game. You're killin' me! (My son was a senior...)

But - for this year, I'll just reiterate what I'm hearing from everyone else. I think it'll be close. LH can NOT afford to have the slow start of the last two games. I know there's a few still playing that have had two heart-breaking losses to Cuero so I'm hoping that is enough motivation to come out fighting.

Last year's game was the best non-playoff game I have ever been to. It wasn't playoffs, heck it wasn't even a district game but the atmosphere was completely like that of a late-round playoff game. Should be great! See you at Panther Stadium!

Oh - and I'll say Panthers by 6. :)

Week 3 Game of the Week is a battle of two elite programs. Last year, the Gobblers defeated the Panthers but Liberty Hill finish the season as State Champs. Cuero will put points on the board, but how many times will they get a chance to have the ball. Liberty Hill should be able to control the game through the ground.

My pick is Cuero Gobblers leave Liberty Hill with a one point win.

Disccus who wins and why.

I just brought up that game b/c in 05' Cuero had a lot more ball carriers than 06'
At least the ball was distributed among the skill players more that year.
This years Cuero team has a lot of playmakers, gonna be hard to key in on that one guy.
If LH has any type of sluggish start like the last few weeks, they'll be down early.

Oh, and was the Cuero game last year their only loss? I can't remember.

Should be a playoff type atmosphere. When you say playoffs you immediately think about special teams. When you say special teams I get that oh @#$%^ feeling. We always find a way to miss extra points and field goals. It has beat us three out of four years in the playoffs including the '04 final.

If LH can kick, they have the edge. If our kicker is on that night, we can pull it out.

As far as LH starting slowly, Cuero starts quickly and finishes slowly. If LH is within striking distance going into the fourth quarter, I go with LH. Cuero needs to be up by three scores at the end of three to win.

I just "form tackled" my computer.................coming from College Station to watch this one. I'm not sure what kind of passing game LH has (probably 3 passes a game and 2 are for TD's) but the Cuero defense sounds really stout. I wish Cuero would rotate their OL and DL more so they don't get worn down by the end of the game. Let's green out LH stadium this Friday night and bring home a win. GO MEAN GREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has LH learned a 2 minute drill yet? Cuero wins this one with a late td in a barn burner 35-31. Would love to come to this game but back to back trips to the Hill is too much for me. Plus i think both sides would tar and feather me if i showed up in a Wimberley shirt. :D

Cuero's xtra points have been on the last two games, 1-1 on field goal and I'm not gonna say the xtra points to avoid a jinx, but this has probably been the longest streak in a while for a cuero kicker in the last 4 years.

Kickoffs will probably be a little different this week, our kicker has been put on JV to play QB. It's now bw our xtra point man to kickoff, a soph LB, or big K.Johnson.

I think Cuero finishes slowly lately b/c they lose the fire to keep on pounding with 50 pt leads, they won't be slow to finish if this is a tight one.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has noticed an overwhelming population of turkeys in some parts of Texas and in a rare move, has moved opening date for turkey hunting season to September 21. Fearing retaliation by some rabid fans in the southern part of the state, the spokesperson asked to remain anonymous but stated "Those turkeys have gone wild. It's time we stood up to them and not let them take over the state".

In reference to the 05 game, the defense we had then was nothing like what is playing now. The highest score this season against them was burnet, 17pts that included a 53 yard field goal. Oh yeah, burnet only got 139 yards total, 133 passing and 6 rushing, turnovers and penalties got most of burnets points. Gatesville didnt break 100 yards offense, and Waco C got most of their yards form special teams and penalties. The first td came from a long return that set the o up, the second touch by Waco C was the result of about 60 yards of penalties that got them out of 4th down about three times during that series. The defense is tough, and the longer they are on the field the harder they play, dont count your points to early. I know we have been known for the Three headed monster, but the defense since the end of last season and this season is top notch.

Seriously this team is very young and losing over 30 Seniors to Graduation hurts our depth too . But this team is also very talented and has done better each game . By the end of the Season come playoff time this team will be ready for anyone win or lose against LH.

the game of the year in all probability

I just don't see an inexperienced, untested, but very good Cuero team coming to LH to beat a veteran LH team...

even though a Cuero win wouldn't surprise me, my gut tells me LH by less than a TD...

that's what I was wondering, I was one of the few that made the trip last year for the 9/jv games, so I know what to expect, but I don't think the rest of Cuero realizes how little room there will be for us

I am going to follow the team buses, hopefully that will get us there before the crowd.

Panthers a big test for Gobblers defense

September 19, 2007 - Posted at 12:00 a.m.

BY MIKE FORMAN - ADVOCATE SPORTS WRITER

CUERO - It might not be the immovable object meeting the irresistible force in the Class 3A showdown between No. 6 Cuero and No. 2 Liberty Hill. But when the Gobblers (3-0) travel to Liberty Hill (3-0) on Friday night something will have to give.

Cuero goes into the game allowing an average of 84.3 yards and 5.7 points per game, while the Panthers are averaging 502 yards and 45.7 points per game.

"It's kind of a select little club," Cuero coach Mark Reeve said of the Liberty Hill offense. "A lot of people run the Wing-T but there might be three teams in the state who run it like they do. It's like any other offense you face but the difference is you don't know how to adjust. They take advantage of what you do on the other side of the ball to be successful. They always come up with another answer. It's evolved. It took them about three years to get to where they are. Not a lot of communities have that much patience."

Cuero has seen Liberty Hill's offense evolve first hand. The Gobblers rolled to a 42-14 win over the Panthers in the 2005 Class 3A, Division II quarterfinal playoffs before capturing a 31-27 win last season when time ran out with Liberty Hill in possession of the ball at the Cuero 10-yard line.

"They execute real well," Cuero rover Jake Rangnow said. "They know exactly how to run the offense. It can be pretty confusing because they use a lot of motion and stuff. You have to do what you're coached to do in your technique. You can't lose your concentration. You've got to be in it for the grind."

Liberty Hill remains primarily a running team, having rushed for 1,242 yards in wins over Waco Connally, Burnet and Gatesville. Tailback Kyle Troxell has rushed for 431 yards and one touchdown, fullback Doug Allman has rushed for 386 yards and seven touchdowns, and wingback Dustin Gonzales has rushed for 351 yards and six touchdowns.

But the Gobblers won't just stack the line of scrimmage because the Panthers threw for their first three touchdowns in last week's 70-7 win over Gatesville.

"You just can't panic," Reeve said. "You can't lose discipline and start doing things you don't normally do. You can't cheat on them because they've been running this thing for a long, long time. It's all about execution. They used to run it and out-execute people. Now they have great athletes and great execution."

Cuero's success on defense has been somewhat of a surprise, considering the Gobblers returned only five starters and tackle Callan Hardin hasn't played a down because of a knee injury.

"This has been a group when we've had concerns we've been able to address them as a team," Reeve said. "They do a good job of meeting our expectations every day in practice. These kids are working awfully hard."

The Gobblers' hard work on defense has made it easier for the offense to average 57 points per game this season. The Cuero defenders realize their offense could be their best defense against Liberty Hill.

"A big part of our offense has been our defense forcing teams in three and outs," Rangnow said. "The biggest key against Liberty Hill will be keeping their offense off the field for as long as we can."

Here, I’ll draw you a picture! You said, and I quote:

“turnovers and penalties got most of burnets points”

“and Waco C got most of their yards form special teams and penalties. The first td came from a long return that set the o up, the second touch by Waco C was the result of about 60 yards of penalties that got them out of 4th down about three times during that series”

Now, I’ll say it again: “If my aunt had b@!!$, she’d be my uncle”!

How's that picture? Do you like pictures?

I haven't read all the conversations on this thread, so I will just comment on what I think.

Much like giddings and hutto, this is a playoff type atmosphere early in the year with overall record being only thing at stake. Best kinda game there is.

I look for a close one here, and feel like cuero will pull it out in the end. I think LH's new starters will get a great experience that they have been lacking to this point and it will prep them for another long run in the playoffs. No hard feelings LH Fans, I think you have a great team, this is just a necessary experience for the spot fillers replacing last years studs. LH wouldn't surprise me if they pulled it out, this is just my gut feeling.

GOOD LUCK TO BOTH TEAMS, and fans enjoy the show and atmosphere.

No purple here, but we plan to come to the game from down Leander way. I'll probably wear an antique Celina cap (98-99 state championships). We'll be happy just to find a decent parking place. We're also bringing some Vista Ridge players (they play Thursday night) who could benefit from watching good competitive hard-nosed small town football.

I think LH wins by 14.
