I was impressed with Clay. I don't know how many yards he had, but I'm guessing he went over 100. He runs very hard and tends to drag defenders after contact.

#10 from Marlin was all over the field on defense. He had some very good stops. I hope everything is alright with the player taken in the ambulance.

Snyder hooks Marlin
By Evan Ren (Contact)
Saturday, September 15, 2007

SWEETWATER -- After giving up more than 90 points in its first two games, Snyder's defense had become surprisingly maligned.

Rated in the Top 10 among 3A teams in the AP preseason poll, the Tigers didn't expect to be 1-1 entering the finale of the Sammy Baugh Classic in Sweetwater. But Saturday in the Mustang Bowl, the Tigers rediscovered enough "D" to shut down ninth-ranked 2A Marlin 28-12.

Will Clay rushed for 179 yards and two scores to lead Snyder (2-1), which forced four turnovers and kept Marlin out of the end zone until midway through third quarter.

Marlin, which managed to gain 306 yards in total offense, fell to 1-2 with the loss.

"The kids played very well defensively," Snyder coach Chad Rogers said. "They executed the game plan, and that's one of the best game plans our coaches have come up with since I've been here."

Snyder got things started quickly, driving 53 yards in just four plays, capped by a 12-yard touchdown run by Clay with 10:58 left in the first quarter.

That, however, would be the last of the scoring for either team in the first half. The Tigers failed on their final four possessions before the break, stalling once at the Marlin 16 and again at the 23.

In six first-half possessions, Marlin crossed into Snyder territory just once, stalling on the Snyder five yard line as time expired at the break.

Both teams struggled through the air from the outset, with Snyder's Lance Day misfiring on five of six pass attempts, and Marlin's Charles Kitchens finishing the first half 2-of-7 for 32 yards. Kitchens finished the night 5-of-12 for 97 yards, but a pair of interceptions proved costly.

"We knew coming in that they were a great football team," Marlin coach Jerry Malone said. "We were lucky to beat them last year when they were young.

"Now we're a bit young, but I thought we played 'em tough."

Marlin finally got on the board with 6:11 left in the third quarter when Antonio Moore scored from 13 yards out. Raphael Kelly's PAT attempt however, was blocked, leaving Snyder up 7-6.

One possession later, the Tigers struck back, driving 70 yards in eight plays, and ending it with a 14-yard touchdown run by Clay with 3:24 left in the third.

Following a three-and-out by Marlin inside its own 10, Snyder took advantage of a 20-yard punt and pushed 33 yards in five plays, ending with an 11-yard option keeper by Day for a score and a 21-6 lead.

On Marlin's next possession, Snyder sealed the game when Joe Rivera scooped up a fumble by reserve quarterback Vance Richardson and raced 45 yards for a score.

Marlin's touchdown came with 4:35 to play on a 4-yard run by Kitchens on a keeper.

Both teams finished with 306 yards in total offense. Moore led the Bulldogs with 108 yards on 16 carries.

"They did a great job of adjusting to what we were doing," Malone said. "We thought they would struggle running to the weak side. So we tried a few things to get them to run that way but they did a great job of running on that side. That's a well-coached team."

NOTES -- Marlin's Oklahoma State-bound running back, Travis Miller, had just 18 yards rushing on five carries in the first half, and finished with 63 yards on just six carries. ... Despite rushing for 61 yards on 15 carries in the first half, Clay had nine first-half carries of under two yards.

He had an asthma attack and a bit of overheating. A nurse was in the stands and said he needed a few minutes of oxygen, but I assume they took him to the hospital as a precaution.

We appreciate the concern.

Hats off to the Snyder "D". They looked to be getting better. They gave up some yards but they kept Marlin out of the endzone.

He is a hard runner, but Marlin did a good job of containing him, I think.

I wouldn't call 179 yards exactly containing him. I guess they did better than Monahans and Hereford.
