KAUFMAN - Overcoming penalties, miscues and an attempted third-quarter rally by Kaufman, Palestine earned its first victory of the 2007 season Friday night at Lions Stadium. Alex Powell put Palestine on top early with a 56-yard touchdown scamper with 3:31 left in the first quarter. After a Kaufman fumble on the ensuing kickoff led to another Palestine score, Kaufman appeared to wrestle momentum away. Kaufman drove down inside the Palestine 20 late in the second quarter, but couldn?t punch the ball into the end zone prior to the half expiring. Led by a bruising rushing effort from fullback Hippo Perea, Kaufman continued that momentum with its first possession of the second half. Perea, who led Kaufman with 89 rushing yards on the night, capped off a 5-play, 55-yard drive with an 8-yard TD run to cut Palestine?s lead to 13-7. Powell, who led all rushers with 103 yards, though, helped Palestine recapture momentum late, scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run with 7:02 left in the game.
