Looking ahead would be an understatement as Northwestern escaped Friday night with a 28-18 win over Homestead in front of 4,000 spectators who were left on the edge of their seats at Traz Powell Stadium.

The nation's second ranked team, which plays Southlake Carroll, Texas next week, trailed 9-0 in the first quarter and 15-14 going into the half and was holding a 22-18 lead with three minutes left to play. It was the first time since 2005 that Northwestern trailed at halftime.

What happened Friday night?

''Turnovers,'' Northwestern coach Billy Rolle said. ``We committed six turnovers. You are not supposed to win when you turn the ball over like that. You have to give Homestead credit. They came ready to play.''

The Bulls fumbled three times in the first eight minutes of the game and fell behind 9-0 with 3:36 to play in the first quarter when Tamba Thompson found Marcus Robinson for a nine-yard touchdown pass.

The Bulls responded with a five-play, 85-yard drive that was capped when Jacory Harris found Robert Demps with a 29-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked.

But the Bulls continued to turn the ball over. Late in the second quarter, Harris fumbled the snap and Homestead recovered at the 44-yard line. One play later, however, Northwestern's Marcus Forston forced a fumble and recovered it.

That sparked a five-play, 55-yard drive that Harris capped with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Kendal Thompkins. The Bulls converted the two-point conversion to make it 14-9.

''Everybody said we gotta step it up at halftime,'' Harris said. ``The offense was getting the ball first and we said we have to step up. It was a long drive, but we had to make sure we scored and we did.''
