Mustangs try to rebound against tough Brownwood team
Written by Jay Langley
After a 40-19 loss to Wichita Falls in the season opener, the schedule does not get any easier for the Sweetwater Mustangs as they travel to state ranked Brownwood Friday night.
“We’re parachuting into some hostile territory and we know that for sure,” Mustang head coach Kent Jackson said. “They are extremely good and they’ve got so many reasons to want to beat us based on the motivation that they have from last year’s game.”
Friday’s game is a rematch of one of the greatest games in recent Mustang Bowl history. In 2006 Sweetwater defeated Brownwood 24-21 on a last second field goal.
“That was a great game last year,” Jackson said. “But we know that they will use that as extra motivation this time around.”
Brownwood heads into the contest ranked No. 9 in Class 4A in the Associated Press’ latest high school football poll. The Lions return 14 starters from a 2006 team that advanced to the Division II state quarterfinals.
“They were a young team last year and they advanced that deep into the playoffs,” Jackson said. “I think they’ve grown up. When you have that kind of experience together you realize that you have a real special group and you can have a real special season.”
In week one the Lions beat a quality Wylie team 28-21. But Brownwood could have blown the game wide open as the Lions had the ball inside the Wylie 20-yard-line four times without scoring a single point.
“We hope that our technique is there defensively,” Jackson said. “You have to rely on that more so than ever because if you are outsized like we are, you’ve got to use your technique and quickness to your advantage.”
Browwood is led by quarterback Casey Parchall who blossomed late in his sophomore season and finished 2006 with 2,073 passing yards and 12 touchdowns through the air.
Brownwood boasts a spread offense similar to that of Wichita Falls. But Jackson said there is one thing that makes the Lions even tougher to defend than Wichita Falls.
“Brownwood is much more versitale,” Jackson said. “Last week against Wichita Falls we talked about covering the entire field. This week we have to cover the entire field but we also have to be ready to stop the run.”
Brownwood’s top rusher is Corey Burr who finished 2006 with 789 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Jackson said the key for his team is controlling the ball on offense.
“We’ve got to to a better job of not making mistakes and taking advantage of the opportunities we get when we touch the ball,” Jackson said, “whether that’s just moving the chains or we move the chains and put points on the board. We’re not going to put points on the board every time against a team that good but we’ve got to get out there and move the ball and work the clock and give our defense a chance to stay fresh.”
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 Friday night at Gordan Wood Stadium in Brownwood.
