Gilmer Blasts Past Tatum, 71-28

Gilmer has been an offensive powerhouse during the Jeff Traylor era, but the Buckeyes reached new heights Thursday night.

Gilmer recorded its most points in a game in more than 24 years in a 71-28 victory against two-time defending state champion Tatum in the opener of the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic at Rose Stadium.

Before an estimated crowd of 9,000, the Buckeyes midway through the fourth quarter surpassed the 68 points they scored against Whitehouse in 1983.

Gilmer senior running back Justin Johnson, an Oklahoma commit, rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns to help spur the Buckeyes offense, while sophomore quarterback Darian Godfrey passed for 158 yards and three touchdowns plus ran for another two scores.

Johnson played sparingly in the second half after rushing for 169 yards and the three scores in the first.

Godfrey’s first touchdown pass, a 76-yarder to junior receiver Devane Cook, gave the Buckeyes a 14-0 lead entering the second quarter.

Tatum rebounded to score 21 points in the quarter and keep things close until the final two minutes.

But Gilmer started its last two possessions — both led to scores for a 43-21 lead — in Tatum territory, the second of which occurred at the Eagles’ 15 after an interception by linebacker Ross Stevens.

It was one of two interceptions thrown in the half by Cashas Pollard, who finished the night 8-of-19 for 216 yards and three TDs.

Gilmer stretched its lead to 64-21 with a 21-point third quarter.

Gilmer impressive in 71-28 thrashing of Tatum

TYLER — Gilmer's football team has had many impressive offensive displays since Jeff Traylor took over as head coach in 2000. Considering the points the Buckeyes put up, and the quality of their opponent, Thursday may have been the most impressive display of them all.

Gilmer set a standard not seen in more than a half-century in a 71-28 rout of Tatum before 9,000 spectators at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. This included a run of 47 unanswered points until reserve Tatum

quarterback Stedman Coleman has a one-yard touchdown sneak with four seconds remaining.

The 71 points scored is believed to the most the Buckeyes have scored since the 1940s, breaking the previous standard of 68-0 in a win over Whitehouse in 1983.

The game, part of the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic, was supposed to be more competitive as Gilmer (2-0) is ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press' Class 3A state poll, and Tatum (1-1) is No. 2 in the 2A poll.

Tatum, which won the Class 3A Division II state title in 2005 and the Class 2A Division I state title in 2006, is 41-5 since Andy Evans took over as head coach, but three of the five losses are to Gilmer.

For the majority of the first half, the game did live up to the hype.

Most of the first half was a back-and-forth offensive battle, featuring the running of Gilmer running back Justin Johnson and the passing of Tatum quarterback Cashas Pollard. Johnson had 154 yards and three touchdowns rushing in the first half, while Pollard passed for 209 yards and three touchdowns before the break. Johnson, who has orally committed to the University of Oklahoma, finished with 163 yards rushing, while University of Houston commit Pollard had 216 yards passing in the game.

The third Pollard touchdown pass was an 11-yard touchdown strike to D.J. Whiting, who had two touchdown receptions in the first half, to help cut Gilmer's lead to 27-21 with 3:20 left in the first half.

The turning point of the game was on the ensuing kickoff, which was a failed gamble by Tatum. An onside kick was attempted, but Gilmer's Lamar Harris grabbed the loose ball and returned it to the Tatum 42-yard line. Gilmer then handed off the ball to Johnson five straight times, ending with a four-yard touchdown run with 1:56 remaining in the first half.

Gilmer got a two-point conversion pass from Darian Godfrey to Ross Stevens, then Stevens made a big play on defense, intercepting a Pollard pass on Tatum's next drive and returning it 15 yards to the Tatum 15-yard line.

Three plays later, Godfrey ran it in from four yards out with 43 seconds remaining in the first half, then added his own two-point conversion to give Gilmer a 43-21 halftime lead.

Godfrey piloted Gilmer to three straight touchdown drives to open the second half and complete Gilmer's dizziness-causing display on offense, including a 62-yard touchdown pass to Houston Tuminello to give Gilmer a 64-21 lead with 4:12 left in the third quarter. Godfrey, a sophomore, passed for 220 yards and three touchdowns, while adding two touchdowns rushing.

Tatum's attempts to rally in the second half were swarmed under by blitzes.

Gilmer had 12 tackles for losses — four by Brennan Thompson — four sacks and two interceptions, including one by Dustin Jones in the first half, which he returned 51 yards. Jones was injured in the second quarter and did not return.

Devane Clark led Gilmer with 95 yards receiving, including a 76-yard touchdown strike from Godfrey in the first half, and recovered a fumble in the third quarter.

Tatum running back Bryce Beall was held to 18 yards rushing on 10 carries. Daniel Bradley led Tatum with 80 yards receiving on a single touchdown reception in the second quarter, and led Tatum in rushing with 59 yards, mostly in reserve play in the fourth quarter. Calvin Stoker had an interception for Tatum, while Coleman had a fumble recovery.

Gilmer hosts Daingerfield next Friday, while Tatum plays at Center.

Tatum looked like a 1A football team upfront. The D Line just stood there and waited for the LB to fly thru and make a play. The Refugio team I saw Friday night would thrash Tatum. Tatum has speed but they better do something about thier lack of effort and size up front FAST if they are to even dream about repeating as 2a champs. Wont happen.
