Despite winning its opener 33-13 over Waco Connally, Liberty Hill — the defending Class 3A Division II state champions — dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 in this week's state poll, behind new No. 1 Giddings.

What made the slip puzzling was Liberty Hill's 11-6 advantage over Giddings in first-place votes.

It turned out that Odessa American sportswriter Chris Gove, one of the voters statewide who contributes to the Associated Press' weekly poll, left Liberty Hill completely out of his top 10.

Calling that a "complete oversight," the omission likely caused the Panthers their No. 1 spot. If Liberty Hill (1-0) beats Houston Kashmere tonight, Gove said, he'll put Liberty Hill back on his ballot.

HELLO?! LH is playing Burnet.

He will probably lose his vote now, a guy last year voted on the college AP without knowing if OU won or lost and lost his vote

Not that it really matters if we're #1 or # 33.....but I thought it made absolutely NO sense. In fact, from a PREVIOUS AAS article:

Giddings overtakes Liberty Hill for No. 1

Giddings, which trailed Liberty Hill by just four statewide votes in the state's Class 3A preseason poll, moved into the No. 1 spot when Monday's poll was released.

The Buffaloes (1-0), who beat formerly 10th-ranked Wimberley 55-21, received six first-place votes and lead former No. 1 Liberty Hill — which dropped a spot despite beating Waco Connally 33-13 — by five votes. The Panthers received 11 first-place votes.

heck, if I was LH, I'd just as soon stay #2 instead of #1 - being ranked #1 is the kiss of death in my opinion :D

Sure looks like 5 points to me...

Class 3A
Team Rec Pts Pvs
1. Giddings(6) 1-0 182 2
2. Liberty Hill (11) 1-0 177 1

182 - 177 = 5

You're right. I was looking at FIRST PLACE votes, which coincidentally is a difference of 5 also.

It only matters where you are ranked at Christmas
Rankings are for the media and for people to buy papers
For parents and boosters to talk smack during the year
Do you know why polls were invented?
because there is/was no playoff system in college football
rankings were a way of papers to sell
people would buy to see where their team ranked
and since there was no playoff system it was the only way to kinda see how your team stacked up
or where "someone who knew" could tell you about your team
there wasnt tv and you didnt see everyone play

Polls are outdated in this day and age of instant media
What would you rather be
Ranked number 1 Sept 1st
or December 20th.

Ask Gilmer about the polls last year?

Yes we have polls for everything
created by the media to get you to listen, buy, pay attention to their writings

just think of all the useless polls that we have

no I do know some of you will bash this
fine
you know where you are in the poll
lol

Exactly!!!

What does it really matter when you are talking about 2 of the the best 3A teams in the state. The potential Qtr Final matchup will be the biggest game in the state that weekend!!!

Being at the top of the polls during the season is'nt always that sweet, it's who is at the top of the polls after the last game in December that counts.
