It is difficult to draw any positives out of a 41-14 loss, but that is the charge put to Chris Henson.

The Pecos head coach said he has never seen a game like the Eagles’ loss to Alpine on Aug. 31.

Pecos moved the ball up and down the field, but the Eagles lost four of their seven fumbles and threw an interception.

“The three (running) backs that were doing it were carrying the ball so loosely,” Henson said. “We didn’t notice it in practice or in the scrimmages. (Monday) we focused completely on ball handling. We filmed the whole practice and showed them every time the ball is being carried loosely.”

Now, Pecos must find a way to recover in time to face Andrews on Friday.

“We stopped ourselves on every drive,” Henson said. “Our three punts were because of penalties and the rest were on turnovers. We drove the ball well. We have three great backs and a good quarterback, and we talked about it (Monday). I think they are still on the path that we can have a great season.”

Henson’s offense always seems to have a great back.

He had a 2,000-yard rusher in Luis Aguilar at Marfa in 2005, and fullback Luis Ortega ran for 2,000-plus yards at Pecos last season.

Running back Hector Ramirez got off to a strong start by rushing for 242 yards against Alpine.

Pecos’ offensive display, which included 20 first downs and 385 yards, was all for naught, though. That would have to be a concern for any head coach.

Henson’s second season in Pecos was supposed to be about the Eagles taking the next step.

They finished 5-5 last season but have their eyes on a playoff spot in District 1-3A this season. How they bounce back from a loss to a Class 2A school could go a long way in determining their chances.

“The effort will be there, but we have to get some things ironed out,” Henson said. “We are going in (to Andrews) looking to prove we are better than we showed against Alpine.”

Not to change the subject, but do you know if the move-in from Greenwood is playing football for Stockton??
