The Andrews High School football team waited until just the right time last year to get hot.

The Mustangs, who dropped to Class 3A during the 2006 realignmnent, struggled with their new competition early, losing five of their first six games. They picked up a critical win over district opponent Lamesa, and Andrews went three rounds deep in the playoffs before losing to Canyon, and the Mustangs showed in their first game of 2007 they hadn’t lost a step. In a rematch of last year’s season opener, Andrews got a little revenge as the team took down Midland Christian 36-6 on Friday night.

Coach Blaine Springston returns 16 starters but the Mustangs lost their starting quarterback who led a pass-oriented offense last season.

Against defending TAPPS Division II state champion Midland Christian, the Mustangs took to the ground. Three running backs combined to rush for 305 yards in the game, most yards than their opponents gained total.

Andrews scored five rushing touchdowns, three of them by quarterback Eric Kelton.

The Mustangs also took care of business on defense, allowing 160 total yards and just 12 first downs. The six points would have been the fewest points the Mustangs allowed last season.

Andrews hosts Pecos next week. The Eagles lost 35-10 to Andrews last season, one of the Mustangs two non-district wins.

Fort Stockton rolls

The Fort Stockton Panthers got off on the right foot in Week 0 as they took down Ozona 49-14.

“In all honesty, the first game of the year, I thought our kids performed and executed exceptionally well,” coach Tom Howard said. “It’s been a long time since we came out of a game feeling good.”

The Panthers finished second in District 1-3A last season and were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by Andrews. Even with their starting outside linebackers out for the season with injuries, this year’s team looks poised to make a run at Monahans for the district title.

Fort Stockton has three weeks until the start of district. This week the Panthers are preparing to host Class 4A Lake View in their home opener, a team they beat 35-27 last season.

“No doubt (they’re a different team than last year),” Howard said. “They’ve got a quarterback who’s as quick as greased lightning who we’re going to have to be able to stop.”

Brownwood jumps to ninth

The Brownwood Lions came through when they needed to on Friday, and the voters noticed.

Brownwood took down always dangerous Abilene Wylie 28-21 on Friday night, and on Monday the Lions moved up one spot in the AP poll from 10th to ninth.

District foes Waco and Copperas Cove are 1-2 in the Class 4A poll, and Frenship dropped out after its loss to Wichita Falls Rider.

In Class 3A, Monahans finished out of the top 10 but received five votes while Snyder, which lost to Monahans on Thursday, received four. Wylie received two votes.
