Placards to lure students to join some of the more than 400 student organizations at Texas A&M University stand outside the Memorial Student Center as Aggies make their way to and from classes Tuesday. For fall 2007, A&M has posted a record enrollment number, with more than 46,000 students.
Records from the first week of classes show 46,612 students are enrolled at Texas A&M - the most in the institution's 131-year history.

There also are more minority students enrolled this year at the College Station campus, university officials said.

Fall enrollment is up by 1,232 students compared with fall 2006, university officials said. Fall 2006 enrollment was 45,380, a previous high for the university.

With that data, Texas A&M was ranked as the eighth-largest university in the nation in fall 2006, according to U.S. Census data.

Ohio State University's main campus ranked first with 51,818 students, Arizona State University at Tempe ranked second with 51,234 students, and University of Florida ranked third with 50,912 students.

The next four spots went to the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, University of Texas at Austin, University of Central Florida and Michigan State, respectively. All had enrollments ranging from 45,520 to 50,402.

Rankings for 2007 have yet to be released.

Texas A&M is also becoming more diverse. There are 5,292 Hispanic students enrolled this fall, which is 351 more than last year, officials said. And the number of black students increased by 64, bringing the total to 1,419.

Those numbers, however, weren't mirrored in A&M's incoming freshman class, the largest in school history and one of the largest in the nation.

There are 8,085 students in A&M's fall 2007 freshman class, nearly 500 of which are enrolled through a cooperative program with Blinn College. But while Hispanic enrollment among freshmen is up by 30 students, black enrollment among freshmen is down by 17, officials said.

Men still outnumber women at the university that once was an all-male school: There are 24,746 men enrolled and 21,866 women enrolled. But in the freshman class, women appear to be making some gains.

There are 143 more Aggie women in the freshman class than men, officials noted.

University officials also pointed to a 397-person rise in graduate students, bringing the total for this fall to 8,688 students.

Like to hear it - I think she enhanced the campus scenery too!
