What a weird game. Turnovers everywhere. Passes intercepted then fumbled. Passes bounce off one player and caught by another. This was one ugly game. It was close throughout the entire game. This game was decided on a Vernon 70 yard 4th quarter touchdown drive that took some 5 minutes off the clock to close the game. Breckenridge has a good team and they fought through a bunch of turnover and momentum changes. Tough group of kids. Vernon just has so many weapons. Their QB Trey Shur made big plays all night. The district championship should be decided next week as Graham travels to Vernon. Vernon and Graham both have one loss on the season and it looks to be a rematch of two years ago that was such a good game.

BRECKENRIDGE, Texas — The Vernon defense did everything but perform at halftime, as the visiting Lions stuffed Breckenridge 32-0 in District 5-3A action here Friday.

The Lions defense did it all, forcing five turnovers, scoring two touchdowns and shutting out the Buckaroos, en route to Vernon’s fifth win of the season and their second in district against no losses.

Jeremiah Gilchrist returned a first-quarter fumble 82 yards for one score, while Seth Beam jumped on a Breckenridge fumble in the end zone to close out the scoring in the fourth quarter. For the game Vernon held Breckenridge offense to just 235 total yards.

On offense, Vernon was led by Trey Schur’s two touchdowns and 72 yards rushing. Anthony Hall scored on an 11-yard run in the first quarter and Duprey Wesley led all rushers with 77 yards on six carries. Jeremy Heatly led all passers with 160 yards.

Vernon improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in district play with the win. Breckenridge fell to 3-3 and 0-2.

It should be a good game when the Steers travel to Vernon to play the lions on their home field. I think the Steers will come out on top in this one.

The steers have to be teh favorite here. Their offense has put up some huge numbers. But in that same breath if Graham is to lose one this may be it. This is a very strong Vernon team with a lot of weapons. No stars on this team, just team players. As the week draws closer we can break down this game. No matter it should be the game of the week in our area.
