Is that a new one or one you took on your trip through there a few weeks ago??

Few weeks ago. Just found some new panoramic software that does a really good job...so now I could put together a pano of the stadium. Here's one from the "other Mustang Bowl" (SMU's Gerald J Ford Stadium) yesterday at the Tech/SMU game (sorry for the large photo...this isn't the full size one):

http://img35.picoodle.com/img/img35/9/9/4/f_GeraldJFordm_71eec5e.jpg

For some reason it won't include the 3rd photo in the stitching and I don't have my camera here to get the other photos off of it...so I'll post a full pano tonight! :)

The picture was taken from the south side of the bowl which
would put those clouds right about over Snyder.

SO unless the mustang bowl has shifted to a field that runs east and west then I believe the clouds are directly North of Sweetwater..;) But you got what I was meaning

It's actually about 20 miles north and about 30 miles west! :p

It's not a DRIVING DIRECTION...It's a map. It has a scale for miles...measure accordingly.

I've always been fascinated with the pictures I have seen of the Mustang Bowl.

What's the story behind the facility? How old is it? It looks rather big for a 3A program, was it once used for a college? Do people sit in the end zone if there is an overflow crowd?

Built as a WW2 project. Seats about 6500 in the bleachers. I have seen people in the endzones. (Stephenville-Andrews, Weatherford-Hereford, and some other playoff games)

Dont hold me to it but I heard that they built it for Texas Tech when Tech was trying to settle in Sweetwater...not positive on that, but we were a 4a pre-2000, but idk what we were back when it was built.

I guess it looks bigger than it actually is. The seating capacity is almost identical to that of Atlanta's.

Our stadium was built in the 1990's and is built in a natural bowl in the pine forrests. The home side features a concret lower deck with bleachers in the upper deck. The visiting bleachers are small, but the view from the bleachers on the home side into the pine trees is amazing.

I wasn't trying to knock it. From pictures I had seen previously I would have guessed it held anywhere from 10 to 12,000.

Including the endzones probably....but we a field that big for a town like us is rediculous...its accomodations like the bathrooms and concessions use to suck but they got that problem fixed...now all we need is stadium seats lmao im jk

i had a picture from probly the 50's?(just guesstimating) where the lightpoles used to be infront of the bleachers and we had grass and trees in the endzone. ill try to find it but sadly i think it was deleted when i was resorting and changing up my computer :(

I had the good fortune of going on a weekend playoff football roadie a couple of years ago and got to watch Canadian - Crawford there.

I was and am still very impressed with the feel of history in that stadium.

We also hosted one (maybe two) 5A playoff games a couple of years ago. I know Midland Lee played once and I want to think Midland High did as well.

Man that Stephenville - Andrews game was great. Shaud Williams VS. Kelan Luker and Cody Cardwell. Close close game - Stephenville won by a TD and went on to breeze through the playoffs and win the state title. Unfortunate that it had to be played in round one.

Yeah that game was crazy, my parents live about half a mile from the stadium and the noise from the Stephenville fans with those noisemakers was deafening at our house.

sorry but it looks kinda drab to me ... not a big capacity ... yeah its "the bowl" but grass would look so much nicer than the concrete ...... just by looking the best thing its got going for it is no track which to me would put it above any stadium with a track

but i've never been there so this opinion is all from the pics i've seen

seating capacity could easily go up if they extended the bleachers to the goal lines on both sides of the stadium. i say they could add 3 sections on the home side and then add another 4 sections on the visitors side. this could easily boost the seating capacity another 3500 (500 spaces for each section of bleachers).

grass would be nice in the endzones. however, the cement helps with crowd volume, better acoustics for sounds and really enhances the atmosphere of the game(imo)

there was rumor about getting a tunnel on the north endzone, they looked into it but it was going to cost about 300,000$(bad memory and not sure if numbers are correct)..... a tunnel would have been awesome, not directly in the center(51steps) but in the corner of the endzone on the home side.

i also think they need to add a sound system :)

visitors side needs a few tweaks with their concession stands. home side had a new one built last year. now if they could update the restrooms as well

pictures of the bowl during the day and a picture of the bowl during a game are two very different pictures. with the sea of red flags surrounding the bowl all then fans, it sure was fun times and brings back many many fond memorys talking about the bowl.

I still love the Mustang Bowl, even if she's an old lady now. I played there in the 70's as a Golden Tornado. The 'stangs weren't as good then, but the field and the atmosphere were great!

It looks alot better now that it has been combed over and black pellets had been laid down, and the colors are much more vibrant after a bad photoshop brightening job
