Well here are a few names that should be on the tips of everyone’s tongue. These are some of the winningest coaches in the state. In fact, none of the above even comes close to their win-loss records (yet).

Check out these guys:

5A – Jim Streety, San Antonio, Madison - Record: 275-106-3: The Mavericks have made the state quarterfinals six times under Streety, who is 121-56-1 at Madison. You can’t talk Central Texas football and not mention this guy.

4A – Phil Danaher, Corpus Christi-Calallen - Record: 324-83-4: Twenty-two seasons with 10 or more wins and he’s the winningest active coach in the State of Texas. These stats speak for themselves … ‘nuff said!

3A – Ben Scharnberg, Atlanta - Record: 171-90-3: Two state championships for football, not to mention two back-to-back state track titles as athletic director. This guy is a winner and Atlanta loves him. Can you say Scharnberg for mayor?

2A – Dennis Alexander, Harleton - Record: 291-103-11: Alexander is No. 3 in wins among active coaches. Captured two state titles and his ‘83 Daingerfield Tigers still hold the national record for holding their opponents scoreless – 14 consecutive games. The ’85 Bears didn’t do that on defense. Alexander should be in some sort of hall of fame for that stat.

2A – Gary Proffitt, Goldthwaite - Record: 183-71-3: Proffitt has been with the Goldthwaite program for 27 years and has never left. Resume features two state titles, plus multiple district titles and playoff appearances, including both in 2006. This guy is Goldthwaite football – period!

6-man – Jerry Miller, Gustine - Record: 262-151-5: Miller replaced Brock Ramsey this season and guided Gustine to a semi-finalist spot and earned a coach of the year honor. Miller is the winningest active coach in 6-man football. This guy got back in the saddle and proved he can still lead the herd.
