View Full Version : Brock Fitzhenry Breaking Billy Sims Record...

It said in the local paper that Brock has a chance to make State History, by breaking the 1972-74 record of Billy Sims from Hooks when he rushed for 100 yards or more in 38 consecutive games...

Brock has rushed for over 100 yards in 27 straight games, and could break the record by the second game in the playoffs...

My question is, what about Liberty Hill? He got hurt in that game and I don't remember him rushing for over 100 yards...

Did he?

I did a search looking for stats, but in the game "aftermath" it seems that no one posted them on here. I want to say he had 51 yards against us.....I do know it was less than 60. I'm sure I still have the AAS article & stats.

Here is the article about the game from the statesman. I don't think all is there but you are right LHPM.

ROUND ROCK — Instead of congratulating his team on an impressive playoff victory, Liberty Hill football coach Jerry Vance ripped his players for poor behavior.

Vance was not a happy camper after the Panthers wrapped up a 35-28 victory over previously unbeaten Giddings on Saturday afternoon at Round Rock ISD Stadium.

"The purpose of the game is to score more points than your opponents, not to act like macho men," Vance said.

Liberty Hill (11-2) will face Hondo (14-0) in a Class 3A state semifinal game next week.

Aside from some lapses in composure, the Panthers played a terrific game. Carried by running back Doug Allman, who gave piggy-back rides to the Buffaloes all afternoon, the Panthers led 28-0 after three quarters, and withstood a frantic Giddings rally.

Allman scored a pair of touchdowns, rumbling for 165 yards on 28 carries. His 19-yard run on a critical third-down play in the final minute allowed the Panthers to run out the clock.

When a bystander suggested to Allman that he carried the team, he quickly responded, "Nah, my offensive line carried me."

Liberty Hill took advantage of three Giddings fumbles, converting all three into touchdowns.

Giddings (13-1) scored on the first play of the fourth quarter when All-State senior Alan Dock picked up an offensive fumble and rambled 81 yards for a touchdown.

After Giddings defensive lineman Michael Robinson recovered a Panther fumble a minute later, Dock hauled in a 41-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Jonathan Locke. In a span of 57 seconds, Liberty Hill's 28-0 lead had been whittled to 28-14 with 10:47 to go.

Another touchdown by Allman, increasing the lead to 35-14, gave the Panthers some breathing room.

The Buffaloes would add two more scores in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, including a 29-yard touchdown catch by Bill Lawhorn, with 1:16 to go, but they would never catch the Panthers.

Giddings' big comeback came with its leader, quarterback Brock Fitzhenry, missing the entire second half with a knee injury. The Central Texas rushing leader with 2,814 yards, Fitzhenry was hurt on a kickoff in the final 19 seconds of the first half.

Giddings coach Derek Fitzhenry, the quarterback's dad, was angry about the play. Brock was not close to the player who was tackled, he said.

"It was a cheap shot," Derek Fitzhenry said. He declined to say which Panther made the hit.

The coach added that Liberty Hill players "taunted" Giddings throughout the game.

A fourth-quarter skirmish between opposing players resulted in two ejections. Both coaches blamed game officials for lack of control.

"I won't let the Houston chapter (of the Texas Association of Sports Officials) call a game for me again," Vance said.

Derek Fitzhenry said the officials did a "poor job" for both sides.

Fitzhenry said one fumble against his team — which resulted in a touchdown for Liberty Hill in the first half — was clearly a mistake because a TV replay indicated the ground caused the football to come loose.

The coach was proud of his team's fourth-quarter comeback, but he added that the Buffs could have won if all his starters played the entire game.

"We needed one more guy," Fitzhenry said.

Perhaps Brock Fitzhenry?

The coach nodded yes.

This marked the second straight season the Buffaloes have been eliminated in the quarterfinal round. Brock Fitzhenry rushed for 51 yards on eight carries before leaving the game before halftime.

Allman said he is happy to be playing Hondo in the semis. He doesn't hold a grudge against Wimberley — the team Hondo knocked off Friday — but, "We want to beat another unbeaten team."

Liberty Hill will get that chance. Maybe they are talking about regular season games and not playoffs?

is Billy Sims the guy that played at either OU or OSU? If so, in 1987, we were staying on Houston and he and his wife/girlfriend were staying next to us and he was so gracious and took pictures with my two older boys and we ate meals together etc. it was a fun time. I wonder where those pictures are now???

So, I'm pretty sure he had 100 yards that game...

I have a question. It might be a stupid question, but I'm curious - humor me.

Who is in charge of keeping "official" stats at games? Is it the home team and is this all done on the honor system or does someone actually watch film later and make sure the stats are correct?

Just wondering.

Just wondering. Usually done by coaches in the box. I know when I was a freshmen I was up in the box with the coaches keeping stats for them and learning the varsity offense. It was like they were preparing me for my sophomore year and varsity.

Looks like this is a case of a local paper not doing their research!

Billy doesn't appear to hold either the most 100 yard games or most consecutive 100 yard games. Appears that the record holder in these areas is probably Kenneth Hall (aka, The Sugarland Express).

He had 38 consecutive 100 yard games and also averaged 234 yards running per game during his carear (he rushed for 11,232 yards during his carear) which tells me he had around 48 100 yard games!! (I'm not 100% these are still the Texas records)

Here's a site that talks about Hall:

http://p103.ezboard.com/The-Sugar-Land-Express/feasttexassupersitefrm2.showMessage?topicID=1100.t opic

UIL records are hard to find (without having to pay for access to them) and Texas records/national records get intermixed. Hall's national record yards in a season was broken a couple years ago by someone in the northeast.

Also interesting that Billy turned 19 in his senior year. Wonder how many people complained about that in 1974??

Fitzhenry had 109 yards rushing vs WO-S in 2006. He had TD runs of 1 yd, 1 yd and 7 yds. He did not have a 75 yard run in 2006 (TD or not). He had a 60 yd TD run in the 2005 playoff game.

gtownfan

You have to be 18 on September 1st (UIL rules). Brock does not turn 19 till October.

19 year old football players is not that uncommon!

I heard that Giddings lost one of the seniors this year to a near by school. Any truth to this or is this rumor????

My understanding is that the kid had a run in with the law and was going to have to spend 45 days in a special program at GHS and that this would have prevented him from playing football for the first 45 days of school.

He transferred to Caldwell, to where his father lives, so he can play. Caldwell HS doesn't appear to be interested in instituting the discipline that he is avoiding by transferring.

There are others on here that are more familiar with the details.

He can only play if Fitzhenry Sr. signs off that he is not transferring for athletic reasons, which, to me, looks like it's THE ONLY reason he is transferring.

from talking with the principals its apparently a school rule that if the punishment is instituted by a state funded school, every school has to uphold that or some type of it if the student transfers to another state funded school...

last statement by buff4life is correct.

Let's say that UIL lets him move to caldwell, which I haven't heard if they approved it or not. He still will be unavailable to actually play or participate in practice for the same period as it would have been here in giddings.

If he has problems with playing for giddings, he should have probably kept that being his only problem, and then he would probably be wearing orange already this week.
