View Full Version : combination lock

My wife has a combination lock that her mom gave to her for a locker at her gym. It's a four digit lock, so there are 10,000 possibilities as to what the code can be. Unfortunately, she didn't realized that she was setting the code when she turned the dials and put the lock on. So she doesn't have any idea what she set it on because she was turning the dials while she locked it.

She said that she was going to throw it away and buy a new one. I said that I'd just figure out the code by trying every number. I'm now on 3300 of 9999. She says I'm crazy for trying...what do you guys think?

Soooo, how did you get it off the locker? Does it have a key also?

it was never on the locker...it came out of the package and she pulled the tab out, not realizing that it immediately set the lock.

But Emerson's right...it does kill time.

3800 and counting...I'm starting to get worried...she wanted the first number to be a 0, so I figured that if she didn't turn the comination THAT much, it should be a number below the 4s...now I'm just praying that it's not a number starting with a 9...

well, I've hit a mental roadblock for a moment. I've hit 5000, and the number is higher. When I first started, I debated about whether I should go from 0000 up or from 9999 down. If I had used 9999, I would have had the number by now.

On the bright side, the odds are on my side now. I'm closer to the answer than I am farther.

it's not a combination lock...it's a numerical one, so they make those to where you can make your own code. There was a little tab inside the lock, where you're supposed to set the lock to the combo that you want, then lock it. Well, she thought that it set when you moved the numbers and then pulled the tab, when actually it sets when you place the lock into the hole. She was mixing the numbers up as she placed it in the hole so that it would lock, and then when she tried to enter her code, realized that it set when she placed the lock into the hole, not when she pulled out the tab.

well guys, in a stunning twist of fate, it appears that mashing the metal buttons on the lock more than 5000 times yesterday has bruised my right thumb. I'll be taking it a little slower today, but considering that there's only 1200 combinations left, that shouldn't be a problem anyway.

That's a possibility that I've been thinking about this morning. If she was turning the dials as it locked in, then I suppose it's possible that it was set with some numbers between the numbers on the dial. For example, if she was in the process of turning the dial, and pulled the tab while she was turning the dial between 1 and 2, then I wonder if it would set the combination at 1.5??? That would be impossible to figure out...

nope...I was wrong...maybe I'll have to wait until the 91s...but there was something about the 81s that felt different...like it was trying to unlatch, but there was one or two numbers off...as soon as I tried 8200, it felt like it always has :dispntd:

From someone on a website.....

If you are thinking of picking the lock, you can see you have a
problem. But all is not lost: cheap combination locks will sometimes
open if you are close but not exactly on the right numbers. That is,
if the first number ought to be 1, the lock will often open if you
dial in 2 or 0, or possibly even 3 or 9. If the lock will open when
you dial in the right number +/- 1, then you actually only have 4
numbers per place (because 1 will work for 0,1,2, 4 will work for
3,4,5, 7 will work for 6,7,8, and then 9 works for 9, gee). There
would then be only 4^4 = 256 combinations to try.
You can also try pulling on the shaft while rotating the wheels (if
it looks like I think it does). Usually one of the wheels will be
holding up the shaft a little more than the others. If you feel very
carefully as you turn the wheels, you may feel the shaft move slightly
out when you hit the right number of that particular wheel.
Continuing in this process, you may be able to pick the lock.

I believe I may be on to something here...I have a tiny pin that I'm sticking down the lock, and while turning it, I notice that I can fit the pin in further if I press "7" as the first number...from what I've read, that extra room means that it's trying to set it free...I believe the answer is in the 7s somewhere and perhaps I just missed it!

just spoke with a representative for the maker of the lock. They said that if you do not know exactly what the combination is, the lock is "dead". They recommend leaving the code at 0000 when you buy it because most people won't try that and it avoids mistakes like this one. They said that even they would not have any way to unlock the lock, but I can ship it back to them and they will replace it.

So I guess we'll just buy a new one, since shipping would cost about as much as the lock did.

It probably cost you about 60 bucks worth of time and effort to figure out that the 5 dollar lock needed to be thrown away.

there are too many different techniques on the internet, none of which seem to work every time. I'm sure if I had a high-powered stethescope like they do in the movies I could figure it out, but at least for now, I'm done fooling with it...I might try to start over doing just 1000 combinations a day to make sure I'm not trying to get through it so quickly, but it's definitely time to just lay it down and walk away.

After my first embarassment, I've been keeping quiet the last few days as I restarted my journey, not wanting to incur any more ribbing or "are you crazy" talk. This time, I started at 9999 and worked my way backwards...I've been working on it secretly for three days now, making sure to take my time and make sure that every number was properly aligned. I knew that it could be done, and that somehow I had missed the combination the first time around.

I set myself a loose limit of about 1000 combinations a day, figuring that by imposing a limit, I wouldn't be in a hurry and accidentally miss a combination. As I went from the 9000s to the 8000s to the 7000s, I remembered that I had felt something in the 7s earlier and had actually started going through them again after it didn't open when I was at 9999. I searched here and saw that I had stopped at 7500, so I knew that if I got there I would just go back to the 6000s.

As I was working down the 76s, I noticed the lock feeling loose. When I got to 760s, it felt even looser. And as I hit 7601, the lock opened!!!!

I've done it! I have conquered the uncrackable lock!!!

I never thought you were crazy I do have a few questions though.

1. Do you wash your hands 20 times a day because they don't
feel quite clean enough.

2. Does all of your can food have to be stacked with the labels
facing out?

3. Are all the towels in your bathroom hung symmetrically?

1. Sometimes...I don't like my hands feeling dirty...it didn't use to be nearly as big of a deal until I took a food sanitation class that explained how dirty and how quickly your hands get dirty.

2. No, although I usually do make it so the labels face out so I can see what it is.

3. Nope. I take them off the rack and loosely throw them back on when I'm done!

Thanks!

I've figured out how I missed it the first time...the number 7 is very loose as the top digit, so it easily moves just slightly. The lock is also much harder to open than I imagined, requiring a pretty strong tug while you're pressing the lock. I actually almost missed it again, but I knew that it felt like it was letting go, so I had to tug it three or four times before it let loose. I've mixed the numbers several times and reopened it, but it's a tough lock to open!

from the agony of defeat to the thrill of victory - that was quite a ride. I didn't think you were crazy at all for tackling the problem. Who cares that it was a 5 dollar lock - it's the challenge and the principle of the thing.
