to pull their starters.

With the history of these two teams I would think this game has become alot like the Snyder/Sweetwater, Snyder/Wylie games in that it really doesn't matter what polls or people think it's the players who tend to step up in "rivalry" games to make them closer than people think.

Of course I'm going with Snyder on this one. Even though it's the first game, I hope the Tigers come out firing on all cylinders to set the pace for the year.

It's almost here! Hope both teams come out injury free.

They wont be in top 10 next week after they lose to Monahans

Neither Sweetwater or Snyder dodge each other. But that
topic has been done and re-done.

A rivalry is built over a long period of time between two evenly
matched teams. Snyder is Sweetwater's rivalry. Monahans
rivals are more along the lines of a Lamesa or Pecos.

I think tonight will be a good game. Monahans has a young team this year so inexperience could play a big part in this game. From all the evaluations I have come across this week it appears that Snyder was very sluggish in their scrimmage with Canyon Randal last Saturday. They can ill afford to come out slow and let the young Monahans team get a lift early or this game could be much closer than the state ranked Tigers need it to be.

41-32 Final.

What a game. Lots of running from both teams. Monahans move the ball very well. What a confidence boost this will be for them. Guess we'll see'em again in the playoffs.

The Snyder Defense has a ways to go. Nothing like a reality check. Game 1 in the season, lots of adjustments to make.

Well this is what it is all about schedule the great football teams they are the ones that make you better. Both schools will get
better Monahans was or is young but offensive line is there key
as you saw helps the youth get confidence. The Lobo Snyder rivalry is getting better and better though you see its a diffrent kind of rivalry this rivalry is tune up for playoff time which I am sure we will see the tigers again come area round hopefully both schools get better and make it back come on lets play the next one at San Angelo Stadium we could pack it to 15,000 here trust me SAn angelo fans will come watch just to see what great west texas programs are doing.

How is it a good game when your defense gives up 41 points?

I figured it was closer to even or Snyder by one. I know they knocked Monahans out of the playoffs twice in that span.

Congrats to Monahans. I was afraid if they were in the game early that even being young they might play the way they did. Neither team played much defense, it wouldn't suprise me if they didn't combine for 800+ total yards. Monahans would open a hole, break one tackle and be off to the races. Other than the first drive, I bet every othere touchdown was a 40+ yard run. I'll bet #13 may have had 250+ yards himself. On a positve note, Will Clay had a great game for the Tigers tonight.
Once again, congrats Coach Owens and the Loboes!!!!

Will be fun year both these teams still have work but they both wont to be in position to make something happen late in the year so they will continue to work the good thing both teams saw some great offenses go to work great for defense to get better coaches will hit the film room and adjust schools that dont play these kinds of games wont find the weak spots the great thing about high school ball is that you can rebound unlike college 1 loss or even ugly win could cause a shot a the big one.

August 31, 2007: Neel leads Loboes to win in varsity debut
Jack Marrion
Midland Reporter-Telegram
08/31/2007

Stephen Neel certainly doesn't look like a rookie.

Monahans' junior tailback, playing his first game on varsity, rushed for 245 yards and four touchdowns as the Loboes shocked No. 5 Snyder 41-32 in the opener of 2007 ASCO Midland Football Madness on Thursday night at Grande Communications Stadium. It was the fourth meeting between the squads since November 2005, and Monahans has now won three, including the season opener last year and a 2005 playoff game.

Coming into the season, all the focus was on the running backs, Neel and classmate Tyson Childress, and their lack of experience in Monahans' sometimes complicated wishbone offense. Neel scored the game's first touchdown midway through the first quarter on a 32-yard run, and added scores of 64, 77 and one yard later in the game.

Neel placed all the credit with his offensive line, featuring starters Ruben Rodriguez, Chase Williams, Kelvin Marlow, Evan Heminway and Kevin Coldewey.

"If it wasn't for our linemen, we wouldn't be going anywhere," Neel said. "That's our whole team, pretty much. If they can't block, I can't run. The only reason I score touchdowns is because of them. It has nothing to do with me."

Monahans coach Mickey Owens agreed with his running back, giving the offensive line credit for the team's recent success in the running game.

"For three years in a row, we've had great running backs. It's the offensive line," Owens said. "We had Sam Graves (two years ago), Josh Rodriguez (last season) and now Stephen Neel. Somebody's doing it up right up front. That's Chris Simpson, the offensive line coach, and the offensive line. Without a doubt."

Using the massive tracts of real estate opened up by his front five, Neel averaged 9.8 yards per carry and managed to outshine his highly touted counterpart from Snyder, Will Clay. Clay ended up with 238 yards and three touchdowns.

When asked about Neel's performance, center Chase Williams said it was just another day at the office.

"We were just doing our jobs," he said. "We were pumped up coming into tonight. At the beginning, they were hitting us in the mouth. We kept pushing, and they finally gave out."

Monahans scored first, but Clay scored next to bring the score to 7-6. A bizarre string of events in the second quarter kept the game tied, 20-20, at halftime.

Monahans punted early in the quarter, but Snyder fumbled on its second play, giving the Loboes the ball. Quarterback Steven Valles fumbled on the next play, handing the ball right back to Snyder, and Clay scored on a 71-yard run two plays later.

Clay Anthony returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for Monahans. Brent Bollinger returned the next kickoff 87 yards to score for Snyder. Neel ended the carnage five minutes later with a 64-yard run.

In the second half, though, Monahans took over. Snyder scored first, on a 26-yard pass from Lance Day to Blaine Knipe, but Monahans scored the next 21 points.

The Loboes (0-1) are off until a game against Midland Christian on Sept. 14.

Well, I had a choice to make. Go to Abilene for a meet and greet or go to Midland. Since I haven't gotten alot of response when I asked about the Tigers I thought I would go and see them for myself.
Observations:
1. The Monahans offensive line was big and opened holes that you could have drove a truck through all night. The opening drive they literally crammed the football down the Tigers throat. The Tigers linebackers would fill the hole but could not make a tackle and the back was in the secondary in a heartbeat.

2. The Tigers need #22 back at linebacker. It appeared that he was probably at safety because there were problems there early and he had to come in, but he is not fast enough to be back on an island by himself. When #13 would break a tackle by a linebacker he was gone and could not be caught by the safety.

3. The Tigers need to be able to kick a point after, the snap was dribbled back on 2 attempts and then the kick was wide on another attempt. Had the extra points been made, the decision to onside kick late in desperation would have been a moot point.

4. As I have stated before, a good football team needs a balanced attack. The Tigers have a very good running game but as a whole they do not pass until they have to. It would appear they have a decent receiving corp that needs to be used. The best example of using the passing game as part of an offensive came when the Tigers ran a play action pass and with the defense playing 8 in the box, the TE was wide open for a touchdown. That play was never ran again. With the saftey favoring the left hash and with in 8 yds of the line of scrimmage the slant was open most of the night, neve saw that either. I really believe that if the pass were to be mixed in with the run the Tigers could be more successful.

5. Special teams, one slip up on a kick off return but otherwise this is a strong suit for the Tigers. They returned one kickoff for a touchdown as well and probably will return several as well as a punt or two for touchdowns this year.

6. Turnovers were a bug a boo as well, several bad snaps and fumbles put the Tigers behind the 8 ball.

Overall a bad night for the Tigers but with some tweaking they appear to have the potential for a good year.

Monahans:

They have a big offensive line and will run over you on offense, they altenate QB's, one is a good runner, option QB, the other is a better passer. They need to shore up their defense as well as they too gave up big plays on the ground especially. They may be young but this game was a big spring board for their confidence to start the year.

That is something else I did notice is that the coaches in the press box are watching what is happening on the field. The Tigers safety was hobbled a bit and came out of the game and was replaced by a freshman and on the very next play the Loboes ran a pass play and threw over the top of the freshman for a touchdown. That's paying atention to detail.

How does that make sense when theh score is 41-32. I don't remember witnesses many stops by either team, except when the offense happened to fumble.
