Fans gather to cheer the Port Isabel High School Tarpons during a pep rally

Hundreds of fans exuded Tarpon pride at Port Isabel’s high school football rally Wednesday night.

Cars overflowed the parking lot at Tarpon Stadium in Port Isabel, and the home stands filled almost to capacity with cheering fans.

In the annual rally to welcome the high school football season, children competed in the pass, punt and kick contests. Winners included 6th grader Isaiah Martinez and 5th grader Sierra Chavez.

Martinez took first place in the boys’ punting contest, and Chavez—who plans to be an artist when she grows up—won at both passing and punting in the girls’ contest.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Estella R. Pineda welcomed everyone to the rally and thanked the community for coming to show their support despite rain earlier in the day.

“We thought for a while this morning we might have to call the whole thing off because of rain,” Pineda said. “But our prayers were answered, and here we are.”

The superintendent then challenged Port Isabel students to meet every challenge they encounter, whether on the field or in the classroom.

Pineda also introduced the school board members and administrators from each of the city’s four schools and district office. She recognized the 32-3A district varsity football champs, the Silver Tarpon Band, the Silver Belles drill team and Tarpon Athletic Club President Gualberto Gonzalez.

Pineda thanked them for their dedication and expressed her hope that the school district’s achievements this coming year would result in recognition by Texas’ State Board of Education.

Athletic director and head football coach Monty Stumbaugh also thanked people for coming to the rally.

“Come out to the games and show your support for these kids,” Stumbaugh said.

The Derry Dolls, the Silver Belles, the Silver Tarpon Band and cheerleaders from junior high and high schools entertained the crowd during the rally.

At intervals during the program, cheerleaders threw Tarpon T-shirts and caps into the stands.

The climax of the evening was reached when the athletes marched out of the inflatable blue Tarpon football helmet and down the track in front of the stands. The varsity football team came last, and fans stood and cheered.

The senior class members of the drill team, the flag corps, the band and the football team were recognized by each student’s name because this will be their final year to perform for Tarpon fans.

The No. 7 Port Isabel Tarpons get another shot at ending No. 3 Edcouch-Elsa’s regular season winning streak tonight at 7:30 in one of the most anticipated Rio Grande Valley non-district match-ups of the year.

The Tarpons will look to avenge a 49-7 drubbing at the hands of the Yellowjackets in 2006. That win paved the way for Edcouch-Elsa to break Port Isabel’s RGV consecutive regular-season victory record of 29 games (1980-83).

The winning streak has now ballooned to 36 games as the Yellowjackets notched a fourth straight Dis-trict 32-4A championship as well as a third straight undefeated regular season record (10-0) in 2006.

“Well, both schools have a great tradition,” Tarpon coach Monty Stumbaugh said. “Even before the streak they had a great tradition. We better be ready on Friday or it will be trouble, but we’ll be ready.”

Both teams return standout players from district champion squads and both schools are overwhelming favorites to repeat again this year in their respective districts. Heading into tonight’s game, the respect each coach feels for the other’s program is mutual.

“To me, it’s one of the best traditions in the Valley,” Yellowjacket coach Joe Solis said. “They have a community that supports their football team; the stadium will be packed.”

The Tarpons return a lot of prideful players from last year who probably have not forgotten the em-barrassment of last year’s loss to E-E. Also, this time, the game will be played at Tarpon Stadium along the bay, allowing Port Isabel to play in friendlier confines.

“Well, you know everyone has a revenge factor against us,” Solis said. “I’m sure that’s in the back of their minds. They are an improved ball club with good skill position players, and we’re going to have our hands full.”

Don’t expect either coach to deviate from the formula that has brought each school so much success. The Tarpons smash mouth brand of football will be on display while new Yellowjacket signal caller Erik Nino (6-foot-2, 185 pounds) figures to be a threat in both the air and on the ground.

“We have to play great defense because they are very explosive,” Stumbaugh said. “We have to control the clock and move the chains.”

Two match-ups to watch are a young Tarpon defensive line against a bigger Yellowjacket offensive line and Nino and the Edcouch-Elsa receivers against an experienced, accomplished secondary led by free safety James Delgado (6-1, 180).

“This is what it’s all about, two good teams under the lights,” Stumbaugh said. “Two good teams are go-ing to get after it.”

This was a very good game..Pi at one point was up 20-14 at halftime the score was 27-27..PI needs to sharpen up their physical conditioning lots of players were getting cramps the 4th quarter and Pi's best RB was sidelined most of the 4th quarter after a good hit from EE defender...had he been in the game would have gone to overtime...Pi is def. ahead from what they were last yr. and this time we finally got a passing game. 32-3A looks real good this year:D

Progreso beats Mission
Hidalgo beats Mercedes
Rh beat Weslaco East
Pi gives EE a good game
La Feria Wins

I have no doubt things will get better every week. I hope Nolan is ok, it's like running a car without a wheel, cuz he has some wheels on him!

Classic Battle

The South Padre Island fireworks display that could be seen from Tarpon Stadium could not hold a candle to the two teams on the field Friday night.

The No. 7 Port Isabel Tarpons and No. 3 Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets traded punches for most of the game, lighting up the scoreboard for 54 first half points.

In the end though, it was two Yellowjacket fourth-down defensive plays that spurred E-E to a 41-33 vic-tory, extending their regular season winning streak to 37 games.

“We held in there for four quarters, but both teams should be proud,” Yellowjacket coach Joe Solis sa
id. “It was just a classic first game of the season.”

E-E (1-0) looked poised to take a lead into the half when Ronnie Villalpando scored his third touchdown of the first half on a five yard plunge with 52 seconds left in the second quarter.

Port Isabel running back Nolan Nuñez was not finished though as he returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the Yellowjacket three yard line. Diego Garcia battled his way in to the end zone two plays later to tie the game 27-27 going into halftime.

The Tarpon home crowd went crazy, and it appeared that Port Isabel had all of the momentum heading into the third quarter.

“Nolan has a lot of speed and hits the creases hard,” Tarpon coach Monty Stumbaugh said. “He’s one of those kids who can be a game breaker for us. That was a huge play.”

The Yellowjacket defense played like a different unit in the second half, making big plays when neces-sary. After E-E scored on a nine-yard strike from quarterback Erik Nino to tight end Aaron Tanguma, Port Isabel mounted a drive of their own deep into E-E territory before facing a fourth-and seven.

“Coach was mad at halftime,” Villalpando said. “He told us that we can’t let them beat us and that we couldn’t end our streak.”

Nuñez would be stopped inches shy of the first down and suffered a leg injury that forced him out of the rest of the game.

The Yellowjackets would waste no time in doubling the margin on a quick touchdown drive that ended in a one yard quarterback sneak by Nino.

The Tarpons would come back, led by quarterback David Alaniz, who threw a seven yard pass for six points to Diego Garcia but the extra point was no good making the score 41-33.

Port Isabel’s Seawall defense would force a three-and out and got the ball back with just under two and a half minutes left, but once again, E-E’s defense stiffened forcing four straight Alaniz incompletions to end the game.

“I had confidence in my defense (at the end of the game),” Solis said. “The fourth downs were the key, we called the right D’s at the right time.”

Villalpando finished with 91 yards and three TD’s on 14 carries. Ronnie Perez needed only seven car-ries to amass 107 and a TD. Nino carried the ball eleven times for 39 yards and a TD and added 93 yards and another TD in the air.

Nolan Nuñez led the Tarpons ground attack with 87 yards and one TD. Alaniz had 70 yards rushing with a TD and 117 passing yards with a TD. Justin Flores returned a punt 55 yards for Port Isabel’s first touchdown.
