With just eight more days until the starter’s pistol goes off to signal the start of the 2007 high school football season, the Rockdale Tigers will participate in one more tune up scrimmage, hosting Elgin on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Tiger Field.
As is the case for just about every team in the state, the defense looked better than the offense in the skirmish with Luling.
“The defense looked great,” said Coach Jeff Miller. “We shut them out until the last series when we gave up a 60-yard touchdown. Other than that, we gave just two first downs.
“They were a lot of fun to watch. I was pleased with the way they flew around the football.”
Giddings—the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A—also joined in on the scrimmage.
However, all-state quarterback and University of Texas signee Brock Fitzhenry did not play.
The Rockdale defense went up against the Giddings offense as part of the tri-way scrimmage.
The Tigers struggled on offense and were without the services of four possible starting offensive linemen and did not cross the goal line once.
Senior Lance Lewis has been lost for the season after having reconstructive knee surgery.
Lewis, the strongest player on the team, re-injured himself on the very first day of practice.
Nick Moorehead was still nursing a rolled ankle, while Austin Dodds also sat out with an ankle injury.
Thomas Betchan also sat out to protect him from any further injury after he suffered a concussion last week in a scrimmage.
“That was big having those guys out, but we didn’t hit the holes and we didn’t hold our blocks very well either,” Miller said. “Our quarterbacks each made a couple of good plays, but we need to react and read better.
“But, after two days of practice this week, we got a whole lot better and we’re way ahead of where we were Saturday.” he said. “We’ve already shown a lot more consistency. Everything’s okay.”
Elgin
Elgin was one of the surprise teams in the state last season, going 8-3 and winning district 17-4A after going 0-9 the year before, in with the Austin schools.
Elgin—the smallest school in 17-4A—is now helmed by ex-Jasper head coach Danny Lauve.
While the Falke family terrorized Rockdale football teams in the past, there’s another on the 2007 Wildcat roster to carry on the family tradition.
Derrick Falke is a two-way all-district starter at running back and defensive back.
In their scrimmage last year, Elgin outscored Rockdale 4 touchdowns to 3.

Rockdale defense looked real good or maybe Elgins O is really bad. In the scrimmage Rockdale 4 tds to Elgin 1. In the live play Rockdale up 13 - o with 4 min to go.
Rockdale suffered 2 injuries last nite qb/wr Sanders leg should be back 1-2 weeks, rb White hand could be out longerI think White scored 3 tds last nite. Elgin had a serious injury on jv looked like a head/neck injury left by ambulance,I have heard he will be fine.
