Chapel Hill Football Player Dies After Wreck

(Staff Photo By Herb Nygren Jr.)SHOW OF SUPPORT: Family and friends gather outside East Texas Medical Center after a Chapel Hill football player was killed in a traffic accident Tuesday. One Chapel Hill High School football player was seriously injured and a second killed, following a two-vehicle crash Tuesday.

Derek Timms died after a wreck on Farm to Market Road 850, north of Overton, shortly before he and Marquis Warren were expected at football practice.

According to an initial report by Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Robert Hartman, a black Ford Focus occupied by Timms and Warren was traveling eastbound on FM 850 and a red Mazda was traveling westbound occupied by one female when they collided head-on in a curve near County Road 3191 before 5 p.m.

Chapel Hill High School football coach Phil Castles said Timms and Warren were both seniors.

Timms was extracted by volunteer firefighters using the Jaws of Life, along with the female driver of the Mazda.

Timms and the female driver of the red Mazda were life flighted to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, and Warren was transported by ambulance.

Timms was pronounced dead at the hospital, and Warren was listed in fair condition.

The name of the female driver of the Mazda has not been released.

Traffic was at a standstill on FM 850 for several hours, while homeowners along the roadway helped redirect traffic.

"We are trying to determine if one car was over the yellow divider line," Hartman said.

The accident is still under investigation.

Prayers from Sinton. I used to live in Tyler years ago and knew some people whose kids went to Chapel Hill HS. Sad news. :(
