yep, just got this from our tech department awhile ago....

AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE JUST NORTH OF THE YUCATAN PENINSULA WILL
MOVE NORTHWEST TODAY AND WEDNESDAY AND INTO SOUTH TEXAS WEDNESDAY
NIGHT. THIS SYSTEM IS BEING MONITORED CLOSELY BY THE NATIONAL
HURRICANE CENTER FOR POSSIBLE STRENGTHENING AND DEVELOPMENT TODAY
AND WEDNESDAY. REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT THIS AREA OF LOW
PRESSURE DEVELOPS ANY FURTHER...IT WILL BRING TROPICAL MOISTURE IN
THE FORM OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO SOUTH TEXAS WEDNESDAY
AFTERNOON THROUGH FRIDAY...WITH LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL POSSIBLE.
ON AVERAGE 2 TO 4 INCHES OF RAIN IS EXPECTED WEDNESDAY THROUGH
FRIDAY ACROSS SOUTH TEXAS...WITH ISOLATED HIGHER AMOUNTS OF 4 TO 6
INCHES. INTERESTS IN THE WESTERN GULF OF MEXICO AND SOUTH TEXAS
SHOULD MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM CLOSELY FOR DEVELOPMENT
TODAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY. STAY TUNED TO YOUR LOCAL NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE OFFICE AND THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER FOR UPDATES ON
THIS POSSIBLE DEVELOPING WEATHER SITUATION.

Is that the one off the coast of Africa? That is the one I am worrying about.

Oh....and yes, thanks for posting the map.

you can' really tell by the pictures but the storm that was supposed to hit tomorrow afternoon has started in this morning. the leading edge is here. i work by the ferry landing at port a. and it has been thundering and lightning since 10:30. now it is starting to rain lightly. it's dark enough for the lights outside to come on. the thunder and lightning is right on top of us.

Yes Dean is in the Atlantic. Models are bringing it to Texas on the 23rd as a Monster, it's a long way off though and hopefully things will change.

normally that is good...if the models say it will hit you early on then you can almost guarantee it wont...most likely wont even be close.....

Wow, first time I hear about this system in the Gulf. I'm not TOO worried about it, though. It probably won't form into anything major before it makes landfall.

Now Dean, on the other hand, worries me. It's track looks to take it right into the Gulf, and it has plenty of open ocean to strengthen into a monster.

burnet44
08-14-2007, 01:52 PM
hurricanes are low pressure
another reason they rotate counter clock wise
also is why they travel against the earths rotation
they travel east to west
instead of west to east
I believe the southern hemisphere may be the opposite?
Not sure
but high pressure does push and move them around
this determines a lot where they travel

Well they still are not sure if the trough will pull it off or if it will creep into the gulf. I think tho that the path favors the Gulf. It is pretty far south if the track is right and that is the wrong place for a trough in August. Troughs usually will not get that far south till September.

Well, let me give my opinion on this...

What a lot of the folks on one of the weather boards are saying is that a trough of low pressure is supposed to develop sometime over the weekend over the northeastern part of the US. now whether or not it will be strong enough to alter Dean's course is the question. This is what everyone should be rooting for is a trough over the northeast to develop, because if Dean does make it into the Gulf of Mexico there is no where for it to go without hitting land.

Just looking at the satellite, it looks like dean is too far south. Unless it goes further north at a later date it will pass south of Cuba right into the gulf. I have never seen a trough go that far south this time of year.

I haven't either...

I just now got thru reading the latest advisory and forecast track from the NHC and the track is actually quite a bit south of where it was earlier today and one of the forecasts from one of the weather boards I read paints a bad picture for the northern Mexico and Texas coasts. So you all definitely need to be watching this one.

What's weird is that when the rain bands hit land they just break up. Sinton ain't got a drop. Went to AP around 3 today, dark as could be to the east. Then it just broke up. This storm may just dry up it even makes landfall. remember there ain't been alot of really hot weather until the last week or so because of all the rain we've had to really warm the western gulf. Seems like it's fizzling to me.

I believe you could be right about this storm fizzling. As early as the 5:00 newscast it looked that way. The San Antonio weather men are still saying we are going to get soaked but I think they are crazy. Now when Dean comes to town that could be a different story.

Houston is getting absolutely POUNDED! Especially the downtown area. I have my police scanner on now, and its nuts, floods, stranded cars, stranded POLICE cars that are unable to respond, and I just heard some guy got struck by lightning. We just had a strong cell go over our house and the lightning and thunder was some of the worst I can recall. We seem to either be inbetween bands of moisture, or its pretty much over for us here....downtown isnt so lucky.
