Can anyone briefly explain the difference in Division I and II for 3A football? Do schools classified as 4 or 5A have the same divisions?

division I is the big school division...i.e. the school that out of the top 3 who made it to the playoffs has the largest enrollment. (doesn't mean the largest enrollment in the district though.) division II is for the other two schools with the lower enrollments.

5A has had this for the logest. 3A and 2A just started this several years ago.

Three schools from each district make the playoffs. Of those, the one with the largest enrollment is Division 1. The other two are Division 2. So there is a 32 team D1 bracket, which takes 5 weeks of play to determine a champion. There is a 64 team D2 bracket, which takes 6 weeks of play to determine a champion. It is the same in 2A through 5A.

If the divisions ensured that large schoools would play against large, and small against small, it wouldn't be so bad. But in some districts, the largest school to make the playoffs is still among the smaller schools overall. In other districts, several schools are among the larger schools overall. That makes for a few pretty small D1 schools and a few very large D2 schools.

Wouldn't want the UIL to take this personally, but the 2 division set up SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The champ in D2 can easily have a larger enrollment than the D1 champ. This is just plain stupid. Although it doesn't really bother me, bother me, bother me, bother me...............much!

I think that UIL should have like a 3A texas bowl, where the 2 3a state champions play each other for the outright 3a state championship.

With that explanation, if a school such as Bellville for lack of a better example.. were to win 3A-Division II.. they will really just be the the best runner up to the Division I state winner? Yes I know they would be "state champs" but would they in the eyes of the football world truly be state champions or "the other champs"?

No. I’ve only known of one person to insist that the D1 champion is always better than the D2 champion. Most people realize that without a unified playoff system, any opinion about which champion is better is just that – opinion. There have been two divisions in 3A since 1998. I think that in 1998 and 1999, the D2 champion was better than the D1 champion. I think it was a toss-up in 2000 and I think that the D1 champion was better than the D2 champion in 2001 and 2002. This year could be another toss-up.

DataPoll’s final rankings agree with me in 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2002, and possibly this year. In 1998 and 1999, the D2 champion was ranked #1 and the D1 champion #3. In 2000, the D1 champion was #1 and the D2 champion #3. In 2001, the D1 champion was #1 and the D2 champion #4. Last year, the D1 champion was #1 and the D2 champion was #8. This year, as of right now, the top two teams are D1 and the next D2, but that could change.

Collier-Sharp only lists their final rankings since 2000, but they had the D2 champion at #1 in their 1999 final rankings. (I remember that because it was my hometown team.) In 2000, the D2 champion was #1 and the D1 champion was #2. In 2001, the D1 champion was #1 and the D2 champion (also my hometown team) was #5. In 2002, the D1 champion was #1 and the D2 champion was #8. This year, as of right now, 4 of the top five teams are D2. The #1 team (Gilmer) is D2, the #2 team (Burnet) is D1, the #3 team (Bellville) is D2. That could change.

All of that is opinion. The fact is that each Division champion is champion of their division, but not of all of 3A. If either of Bellville or Gilmer wins the D2 championship, they will be undefeated, and nobody can rightfully say that they are runner-up to anyone.
