I was on vacation last week, and I do not see a thread on this yet. 2 sophmore football players that had just moved up to varsity were severly injured in a wreck. The guy that hit them was estimated to be going over 100mph and had been drinking. Please keep these guys in your prayers. We are only hoping they can recover and lead a fairly normal life, as they will never play sports again.

Wreck Friday kills 1, injures 4

By NANCY ROYDEN

Speed, alcohol may have contributed to accident

A Hutto man was killed and four other people - including at least three teenagers - were critically injured in an accident involving three vehicles Friday night on FM 1660 South.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Kevin Gillaspie, 21, of Hutto died at the scene of the wreck at the intersection of FM 1660 and Carl Stern Boulevard.

Gillaspie was driving a Camaro that collided with a Ford F-150 pickup

A passenger in the Camaro, Jimmy Garcia, also was injured. He was listed in fair condition Monday at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin.

Three teenagers in the pickup - John Sliwa, 18, and Tyler Sliwa, 15, of Hutto, and Steven Page, 15 - also were injured and taken to Brackenridge Hospital.

Tyler Sliwa and Page were listed in critical condition Saturday morning. John Sliwa was listed in stable condition, according to DPS.

Information was not available from DPS regarding occupants of a Chevrolet Impala also involved in the accident.

Trooper Michael J. Smith said Friday it appeared the Camaro driven by Gillaspie was southbound on FM 1660, the Impala was westbound on Carl Stern Drive and the pickup was northbound on FM 1660.

Smith said the truck apparently turned in front of the Camaro. The Camaro struck the pickup with such force that it went underneath the truck, which then flipped over.

All three of the occupants in the pickup were ejected from the vehicle, he said.

Marks left by the Camaro's tires are being investigated to calculate speed, Smith said.

He said speed, failure to wear seatbelts and alcohol may have been factors in the wreck.

Smith, who used to work in Houston investigating street racing, said modifications to the Camaro were designed to increase its speed.

About 18 to 20 beer bottles also were found in and around the Camaro, and officers discovered a receipt for the alcohol signed by Garcia, who is 20.

No one in the truck or Camaro was wearing a seatbelt, Smith said.

Information from the DPS investigation will be given to the Williamson County District Attorney to determine if charges for failing to yield will be levied against John Silwa, the driver of the truck.

Firefighters from Hutto Fire Rescue worked for several hours at the accident scene, which blocked traffic. Other area fire departments, including Leander Fire Rescue, also assisted.

STATAir, based in Georgetown, and STARFlight of Austin sent air ambulances to take some of those injured to the hospital.
