Joe
because basball is such a low percentage game
if your a 300 hitter your pretty good
name another sport where 30% is pretty good

It takes longer for the rushing title
you can have a bad game or season
the hit streak you cnat have a bad day
little room for error

but the rush record is a career thing
Joes is just a streak

they are very different

In his last game as a Cowboy Emmitt Smith wound up just 25 yards short of having a twelth 1000 yard season. He had a good shot too because he didn't have to have a really great game but that line couldn't block well enough for him to get 25 more yards.

Cal Ripken's consecutive game streak...Gehrig's the only player who has even made it HALFWAY to what he ended up with.

Wayne Gretzky

His numbers are so much better than anyone else that he is truly an aberration

i dont... all you have to do is just play for X amount of innings... with the hit streak, you have to be hot for some many days in a row...

do i need to be?

the NHL points scored record?

most assists!
most goals!

most rediculous ppg average!

I'm not even a huge hockey fan but i can't think of more rediculous domination (or of a more unbeatable record)

but if you take a day or two off because you're feeling tired, you can come back fully rested a couple days later to continue that streak.

I think that's the point...he holds so many records...this is asking which individual record is the most impressive, and you just listed four right there...of those four, which one is most impressive to you?

Cal Ripken's streak is impressive, but also half-luck

Any of the records Tiger Woods is destroying.

Just because he is great does not diminish the feat.

and a hitting streak isn't? What if a player makes a diving catch to rob you of a sure-fire double?

100 points? What if one of those shots rolls off the bucket instead of into it?

756 home runs? What if the wind blows hard in and you lose a homer or two?

NFL rushing record? What if Emmitt had played behind a bad O-line?

All records are half luck.

Cy Youngs most wins. 515? somewhere around there. That will never be broken.

good example of why its so hard (and useless?) to compare records set in different eras ..... Cy Young pitched during the "dead ball era" and relieif pitchers were non-existent then - so if the team won & he pitched he got the win 98% of the time

so yes, that record will never be broken

I think this is a great point. So many of these are amazing; that's why it's so hard to break them.

The points record

all the others are derivatives of it

He has more assists than anyone else has points--that's a crapload of points!

plus, that was during the modern era, so his stats aren't inflated like cy young's

Cal Ripken's streak is amazing, coming out to play every single day is outrageous and won't be broken anytime soon.

The rushing record is very impressive.

However I don't think the NBA record will ever be beaten so I think that is the most impressive.

I don't know

i think a player will come along that does it someday, but the circumstances would have to be just right

Single or All-time? I think Kobe might break the single game record this year if he ends up being stuck in LA again.

as much as I hate to admit it being a die-hard football fan, I think the Home Run record carries more weight than any other record out there.

i think the NHL record is more impressive

but

the Home Run record is by far the greatest in sports, simply because of the mystique of those who held it

Ruth, and Aaron

:(

It just doesn't seem right with Bonds on the list, not that i personally dislike him

I will go with the rushing record. 18000 plus yards in a football career where 300 pound lineman hit you every game. Full speed collisions at 40 MPH. War man it is just War...... Anyone that can survive that and churn out those yards year in and out and in Emmitts case be a champion not once but several times, that's the best. That is why the rush record is the best. Survival of the fittest.

If Gretzky was an abberation, what was Pudge in his prime?

I remember a graphic on him a few years back. He was throwing out 58% of his runners. The next three guys were something like 32, 30, and 29%. He was so much better than the next guys, it was sick.

Kind of like when Babe Ruth's home runs were greater than all of the rest of the American League COMBINED.

You really think that in the modern day someone will be able to put up 100 in a game?

I just don't see that ever happening again.
