If you don't know already, the UIL is exploring the idea of dividing teams in two divisions for football before the season, not afterwards. It would be for all classifications and eliminate four-team districts. The proposed plan would set up eight-team district with four advancing to the playoffs. What do you think about the idea? It could become effective in the next realignment, but it might not be the rule until the next time.

I am in favor of this change. The currnet way of doing things doesn't make a whole lot of sense. All season long you make the smaller schools compete with the larger schools for a chance to make the play-offs and then all the sudden come play-off time they snap away the big schools into their own division and give them their own title almost as a reward for having a larger enrollment than the other play-off teams from their own district. The affects of the current system really tend to hit 3A the hardest because of the wide range of enrollments. You have the Burkburnett's at 949.5 and just 50 miles down the road you have the Bowie's that are just 5 kids above dropping to 2A. Bowie may have 40 kids in the entire HS that come out for football versus Burkburnett's 40 Varsity, 45 JV, and 60 Frosh and it is very possible that these two schools will be in the same district together after the next reallignment. Just doesn't seem to work out real well. With the new plan the big schools will be in a district with other big schools and the smaller schools will be in a district with other smaller schools from the very beginning.

I am in favor of this all the way down thru 1a. One of the biggest advantages is that the 2 champion divisions will actually represent
small vs small and large vs large. The current system actually only allows more teams to play but does not garauntee that a small school will be represented. Celina is a perfect example. 13 2a in 05 had 3 schools in 3a territory with Prosper and Argyle having over 500 kids and Celina over 400. Guess which three schools represented the district? And Celina was at the bottom of 3a already in enrollment because of the growth since the last realignment. If you want true two division you have to set the divisions up in advance. Otherwise the small guys never have a chance. In 04 Crawford was a true small school and won it all but that happens rarely.
