View Full Version : Article in September Texas Monthly

I have it on semi-good authority that Texas Monthly is planning an article in September about the Top 20 prep football programs in Texas.

I get the feeling that it covers the Top 20 from a historical perspective--those that have produced winners for a number of years.

I had to Fed-ex old yearbooks to TM for the article. That's the only reason I'm in the loop on this. I have no idea what programs are being covered, although I can make some educated guesses.

Some obvious guesses would be:

Cuero :D
SLC
Odessa Permian
Celina
Sealy

Any other ideas?

I actually emailed them a few months back and said they should do a story about the Downlow. 100% true. Will they do it or not? I guess we'll see...

I am, but just barely :)

The hubbie and I are going to NOLA next week--I've never been and I cannot wait. My husband got me tickets to ZZ Top for my birthday so that will be my "last hurrah" before school starts.

Are you going through empty nest syndrome yet?

Thanks! I'll stop by sometime after the trip and get a couple. Mr. Maltony usually keeps me supplied during the year. I still have to pick up my season tickets--a little behind on all of that this summer for no good reason.

Looking forward to the TM article. Had to send the '74, 75, and '87 yearbooks, so you can do the math  Big Daddy at the field house said it would be in the Sept. issue.

Tell Baby 44 hello for me. Tell him to enjoy is freedom now, 'cuz it's all downhill from here... :( :D

The Booster Club needs to tell Reeve to call Danaher and get that Calallen-Cuero series revived. We'll put the heat on Coach D from our end. That was a great series...two top-notch programs just throwing haymakers in week 0 every year...

Judging solely on number of wins rewards teams who have been around 100 years and hurts those that have emerged in the last 40 years.
WO-S has the best winning percentage of any school in any classification, but we've only been around for 29 seasons. We haven't even come close to playing 600 games. If we had gone undefeated for 29 seasons (16-0), we wouldn't have made that 3A Top 10. We'd have 464 wins.
I'm not saying we should be in the Top 20, though we've only had one losing season and one 5-5 season since our first year in 1977. We've only had four seasons with fewer than seven wins, have had eight 10-0 starts, one 15-0 season and one 15-1 season. That includes time in 5A, 4A and 3A.
I just think going sheerly by wins is misleading.
