SAN ANTONIO — As it turns out, there really is a method to Mike Leach’s madness.
With punter Alex Reyes gone, and highly touted freshman Jonathan LaCour from Kingwood not due in until the summer, the Texas Tech coach actually placed a want ad in the Daily Toreador, the campus newspaper.
In a scene reminiscent of the movie Invincible, where then-Philadelphia Eagles coach Dick Vermeil put out an appeal for players, more than 60 candidates showed up for an open tryout.
“With all due respect, because I’ve tried some things that I’ve failed at dismally, too, but there were some guys that didn’t belong there,” Leach said Tuesday at the Big 12 football media conference. “Let’s put it this way: There were some guys that I could have defeated. But my hat’s still off to them.”
“We did find some guys to do our drills (in the spring) and some guys that are going to hang on to see how they’ll develop,” Leach said. “Are we going to start any of them? No, but it did help us do our drills.”
