July 19, 2007 - Boxscore

AUBURN, NY --- Adrian Alaniz continued his dominance of New York-Penn League hitters as he allowed just two hits and struckout eight over six innings to lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 3-1 victory over the Auburn Doubledays on Thursday night at Falcon Park.

Alaniz retired the first nine batters that he faced and the only two hits that he allowed were both to Ben Zeskind, leading off in the fourth inning and with one out in the sixth inning. Alaniz had just two strikeouts over the first three innings, but then had two strikeouts in each of his last three innings.

The eighth-round selection in this year’s draft out of the University of Texas, Alaniz (4-0) has now allowed just one earned run in his 25.2 innings of work this season. He has not given up a run and just eight hits with no walks and 20 strikeouts over 17 innings in his three starts for the Lake Monsters.

Vermont got on the board in the third inning thanks to three singles in a row, including two infield single. Dan Lyons led off with an infield single and Jorge De la Cruz snapped an 0-for-27 slump with a single to center with Lyons moving to third on a fielding error by centerfielder Adam Calderone. Boomer Whiting then chopped a single up the third base line to score Lyons.

The Lake Monsters got another run in the sixth on a one-out triple from Aaron Seuss and a sacrifice fly from Craig Stinson for a 2-0 Vermont lead.

The Doubledays got that run back in the seventh off reliever Caleb Staudt, who gave up a one-out walk and then an RBI triple to Victor Santana. But with the tying run on third base with one out, Staudt got a groundout to first and groundout to short to keep the lead 2-1 for the Lake Monsters.

Vermont got an insurance run in the ninth as Stinson led off the inning with a single before pinch runner Jonathan Martinez stole second and third base with one out. After a groundout and walk, De la Cruz got his second hit of the night with an RBI infield single to shortstop.

Martin Beno struckout five Doubledays over the final two innings to pick up his first save of the season. Beno is the ninth different Vermont pitcher to record a save this season as Lake Monster relievers have 12 saves in the team’s 16 wins.

Vermont (16-13) begins a three-game series against the Jamestown Jammers at historic Centennial Field on Friday night with Hassan Pena (3-2) the scheduled starter for the Lake Monsters in the 7:05 p.m. contest. Glenn Gibson (3-0) is scheduled to start the 7:05 p.m. Saturday game and Colton Willems (2-0) the 5:05 series on finale on Sunday

NOTES: Vermont went 3-3 on the six-game roadtrip and are now 8-7 on the road this season ... The Lake Monsters have not lost more than one game in a row away from Centennial Field this season ... Thursday night’s game started 55 minutes late due to a rain delay and most of the game was played in a light drizzle ... Last week former Vermont manager Kevin Higgins (1996-97) returned to Vermont as the hitting coach for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers ... Another former Vermont coach returns this weekend as 2002 Vermont Expos pitching coach Charlie Corbell holds the same position with Jamestown.

Glad for him. He has good #s overall. He will be advanced soon up the chain. He is too old for Class A ball (isn't he 23 or almost 24 now?). Spent 4 years at Texas with a redshirt.

We were told that the Nats start everybody there, no matter what.

Oh yes, very common to start a major college kid at short season A ball then advance as warranted. He should go to High A ball with a chance to finish at AA this year (or start AA next spring). My only point was his age & getting him moving soon. Glad he is doing well & have always heard good things about him.
