Steers return to kick off Classic in Abilene

The weekend begins with Midland Greenwood taking on the Graham Steers in the kickoff game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30.

Greenwood came out on top of Graham in the 2006 Classic. Both 3A teams are coming into 2007 with playoff expectations. The Greenwood Rangers are picked second in their district and Graham is picked to win its district according to “Dave Campbell’s High School Football.”
The two teams met at Shotwell Stadium in postseason play last year with Greenwood coming out on top.



Friday night will bring Wichita Falls Rider against Wolfforth Frenship at 7:30 p.m.

This match up in the 2006 Classic had Frenship winning 14-12. The two teams met again the fourth week of playoffs with Frenship coming out on top 17-10. Both teams are ranked number one in their district in pre-season polls and Frenship is ranked No. 3 with Rider No. 5 at the state level.

A great small school match up begins at 11 a.m. Saturday with the 2A Anson Tigers taking on 1A Hamlin Pied Pipers.

The Tigers are hoping to keep a healthy team and move into the playoffs. Hamlin anticipates a strong showing in their district.

2007 GoFridayNight.com Champions Classic concludes with Abilene High and Austin Westlake in a 5A contest at 7 p.m.

Austin Westlake came up short in the Division 1-5A state championship game against Southlake Carroll in 2006. Abilene High went three weeks deep into postseason play last year. This should be a great finale to the entire weekend.
Tickets will be available for each game at the gate.

East Texas Football Classic
Will be different this year

In the past, the East Texas Football Classic has hosted high school football teams from California, Florida and Nevada.

But this year, the Classic will not have an team from out of state.

The fourth annual event will have another change this year. It will not kickoff the high school football season. The Classic will be held the second week of the season.

John Tyler will host Dallas Carter Friday, September 7. Tyler Lee will host Euless Trinity Saturday, September 8.
