Local high school forced to change logo in dispute with universityUniversity is throwing its weight around
By Tom Abrahams
(7/13/07 - KTRK/THE WOODLANDS, TX) - A single letter has led to a logo dispute between a local high school and a Big 10 college, and the little guy lost this football fight. Who knew the letter "w" could cause so much trouble?

The Woodlands High School is having to change its letter logo because it's just too close for comfort for the University of Wisconsin. It might seem funny, but it's serious business for the University of Wisconsin. We spoke to the Conroe ISD superintendent, and he said he first found out about the problem a year ago. He contacted Barry Alvarez, football coach and athlete director for the University of Wisconsin, and was told not to worry about it.

Even though they said it was no big deal, the university apparently changed its mind, and The Woodlands is having to change its W.

Craig Todd is a real Highlander. As a soccer player who moved to Texas from Scotland eight years ago, he can't believe Wisconsin is badgering his school about its logo.

He said, "I don't understand why they're making a big deal about it. It's just another W."

But to Wisconsin, it's not just another W -- it's the 'motion W' they've had trademarked for 11 years. The school told Eyewitness News that other schools using the motion W dilutes the identity and reduces the value to the university. And so, it has asked 40 schools in 26 states to change their W's.

It didn't help The Woodlands that the football team appeared on national television, and Badger alums everywhere complained to their alma mater.

"I honestly don't think it's all that big of a deal," said Woodlands High School senior Kevin Waller. "I mean, we're all the way down across the country."

Woodlands High School senior Michael Wagner said, "They really shouldn't be that outraged about the shape of that W. Seriously."

And for rising senior Craig Todd, the Highlanders just aren't the same with a different W.

"I don't want to see it changed," he said. "I like it the way it is."

A lot of people in the area like it the way it is. But it is going to be changed a bit, over the next few years.

I remember the same thing happen to Schulenburg back in the early 90's except it involved of a famous movie logo Superman. Do anyone in South Texas remember this . I wonder if the Shorthorns ever changed it or still have it . Now these days several schools still use the logo

Several months ago the same thing happened to A&M Consol (College Station ISD) as they were asked to change their tiger logo because it was very similar to that of the University of Missouri.

They could never go after the Itasca Wampuscats. The creature apparently has six legs and a body like a cougar. Leesville, LA and Itasca, TX and Clark Fork, Idaho and Atoka HS, OK and Conway, Ark. all share the Wampuscat.

Take that you mean nasty big high dollar silly English bottom wiper NCAA Division 1 snob mascot stealing schools.

The only thing dumber than this is how you can't use the phrase "Super Bowl" in certain advertisements. Ya'll ever notice that? Is that a copyright issue?

Just too much money to be made in sale of products bearing logos. Colleges have gotten greedy and don't want another group, school, institution, etc. making any money off their logo.
This W seems to be going to extreme, but it's really no different than Aggies with their 12th man products going up against Seattle Seahawks, or the Horns filing suit against A&M guy making the sawed off horn products.

Your comparison was spot on with A&M taking the Seahawks to court. However, the Longhorn logo that A&M was using isn't the same thing. The right comparison, should we want to compare UT to doing this type of thing ala Wisconsin, would be when Texas told the City of Ft. Worth that their steer head on their city logo resembled the official UT steer head way too much and they needed to change it.

Nonetheless, Wisconsin needs to get a good look at Round Rock Westwood. Their orange W looks more like the Wisconsin "W" than The Woodlands.

Also, Kansas State took Flower Mound High School to court right before they opened because of logo issues.

I remember that the Jacksonville Jaguars had to change their orignal logo because the makers of Jaguar automobiles said the logo was too close to theirs.
