The NBA champion San Antonio Spurs acquired guard Vassilis Spanoulis from the Houston Rockets for center Jackie Butler and the draft rights to Luis Scola.

The Spurs will also get the Rockets' second-round pick in 2009, San Antonio said in a statement Thursday night.

Spanoulis, who averaged 2.7 points in 31 games as a rookie last year, has said he didn't want to return to the Rockets because he was homesick and wanted to remain in his native Greece.

Butler played in 11 games for the Spurs last year, averaging 3.7 points.

Scola averaged 15.5 points, 5.9 rebound and 2.2 assists for Tau Ceramica in the Euroleague this season.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said he expects Scola to help his team immediately.

"He adds experience and toughness at a position of need on our roster and is an NBA-ready player with a very high basketball IQ," Morey said in a statement

If the Rockets sign Scola, he would help solve their PF problems. Scola is considered one of the top 5 international players not currently playing in the NBA. Not sure why the Spurs would make this trade, other than to free up some money under the salary cap. With Spanoulis stating that he will stay in Greece, Spurs basically get a late 2nd round pick for Scola and Butler. Maybe they figure the Rockets can't sign Scola.

Scola is still under contract with Tau Ceramica, unless the Rockets want to pay his enormous buyout, he won't be playing in the states any time soon.
T
he problem with Scola is he doesn't want to use any of his own salary from an NBA team or his past earnings for his buyout, he wants the team he is gonna play for to put up all the cash.

I think the Rockets should think long and hard about this.

The buyout has been reduced to 3 million (originally 10 million). I just heard that Houston has agreed on terms with Scola for 3 yrs worth about 10 million dollars. NBA teams are only allowed to contribute 500 thousand toward a buyout.

Houston Chronicle article:

The Rockets have come to a "basic agreement" with Argentine star Luis Scola, less than 24 hours after acquiring his draft rights from the San Antonio Spurs.

"We're working on the contract, but we've got a basic agreement, an understanding," George Bass, Scola's agent said Friday.

"He's actually taking the physical right now in Argentina."

The Rockets traded guard Vassilis Spanoulis, a 2009 second-round draft pick and cash to the Spurs for the rights to Scola and center Jackie Butler.

Scola is expected to sign a three-year deal worth roughly $10 million.

"He's so excited, he probably didn't sleep a wink last night." Bass said.

"He's thrilled, this has been his dream for five years
