All right I'm in.....I won't get into too much of the tournament since you guys have been getting the info from me all day anyway!

Bridgeport and Athens played a pretty heated game...both teams played hard with Athens winning 32-27...as I was walking up to the refs to confirm the score during the handshake line I heard with my own ears a Bridgeport player throw out a racial slur to an Athens player and it was the BIG one if you know what I mean and that set Athens off and all hell broke loose

Its a shame too because Athens and Bridgeport were two of the best teams out there

Do you honestly think those kids from La Villa really care?

They've been told over and over that they can't compete because they're 1A,because they're from Region IV,because they're from the RGV. For being a 1A from the Valley, I'd say they made a pretty good showing.

You could have left that last part out and it would have been OK. Did it make you feel better to type that?

LaVilla led Melissa 32-14 at the half of their 1st round bracket game but in the second half they just had nothing left and lost 39-32....I give them credit they laid it all out on the field and competed hard...that's all you can ask...in the end better talent and depth wins out most of the time though

A few pointless stats about the remaining field of 16 teams

In the first elimination game:
all eight #1 seeds won
four #2 seeds won,
four #3 seeds won
all eight #4 seeds lost.

Among the final 16: There are two 1A teams left (Harper and Normangee), three 2A teams left (Crane, Hitchcock and Melissa) and eleven 3A teams left

From the original 8 pools:

Six of them have 2 remaining teams (Pools B, C, D, F, G and H)
One has only 1 remaining team (Pool A)
Pool E has 3 of the 4 teams still in contention

Region I has 2 teams remaining
Region II has 5 teams
Region III has 4 teams
Region IV has 5 teams

The largest discrepancy in enrollment of the round of 16 matchups:

1. WO-S has an enrollment 4.02 times that of Harper (775 vs. 192.5)
2. Navasota has an enrollment 3.79 times that of Melissa (788 vs. 208)
3. Diboll has an enrollment 3.13 times that of Normangee (540 vs. 172.5)

The remaining 5 matchups are between schools that are much closer in size (Pleasonton vs. Rockdale - 1.80, Graham vs. Pilot Point - 1.70, Palacios vs. Crane - 1.69, Mabank vs. Canton - 1.62 and Celina vs. Hitchcock - 1.25 are the ratios)

The 16 remaining teams are from 15 different districts with 9-3A the only district to have two teams still alive with Celina and Pilot Point

Good for La Villa! In my experience, it seems like 7 on 7 is a semi-equalizer. WO-S won its way into the tournament last year and the year before by beating a 4A and two fairly large 5As (Beaumont West Brook and Port Arthur Memorial, home of Jamaal Charles).

yeah makes everyone look good

Someday the UIL will probably let the school coaches
run the deal

I know like they dont now

but stuff like this will probably sway their thinking into letting it be done by coaches

not just parents or nn's

11. Coaches—Fathers.

A. No high school coach may serve as a coach or stand with the team on the sideline.

B. Each team must have a coach accompany it to any/all events to serve as a school administrator on duty for their particular team(s). This individual is responsible for the

ACTION OF THOSE REPRESENTING HIS SCHOOL!

ALL HIGH SCHOOL COACHES PRESENT MUST SIT IN THE END ZONE.
NO HIGH SCHOOL COACHES ARE ALLOWED ON THE SIDELINE.

Does this "Bracket" mean that Celina plays Pilot Point next?

Looks like it. That would be a shame to eliminate the possibility (however remote) of a PP/Celina final.

Oh well, congrats to Aransas Pass on getting the opportunity to play some fine teams they might not otherwise ever see. The last couple of days had to be tough for all involved and a test of endurance...two-a-days are right around the corner.:)

They had a good run!! Once again, I expect big things out of the Panthers this year - I hope they don't let me down. ;)

Would someone mind telling me why it is not surprising?

I drove many hours from Bridgeport down to College Station to watch the first round of bracket play only to hear our team was booted for fighting.

ABSOLUTELY COMPLETELY EMBARRASSING.

From what I heard Bridgeport was throwing down the racial slurs during the Bowie SQT also....one ref told me he did a Bridgeport football game last year when they played Gainesville and the N bomb was thrown down also.....

Matt, that is a shame, when I still reffed I would tell the kids at the toss that there were 8 words not tolorated on the field
I would tell them they knew them, and that the word that started with an N would get them flagged faster than any of them.

Tell me about the Melissa QB, his Aunt and Uncle live in Canadian and I have heard alot about him

I absolutely hate the "N" word. I have extremely good friends who are all shapes, sizes and colors. I get very uncomfortable when the kids (high school age mostly) use the "N" word - mainly in jest with each other (white guys to the black guys and vice versa) I realize they are just joking around with each other and 99% of the time, it's good friends playing around, but then younger kids (my 6 year old granddaughter for example) hears this and she doesn't observe any negativity and she certainly doesn't understand the difference between joking and being serious, so she could easily use the "N" word to/about someone who might not think it's quite as funny as another person. I notice most of the time when the 'high school age" kids use the word, it's more of the slang version with an "a" at the end instead of "er" - the kids use it on their myspace pages (white and black kids) they talk to each other using it - almost as a "term of endearment" I have a sneaky feeling that the word used at the tournament today was not being used as a term of endearment - and that's when it gets really nasty. I just wish it would not be used at all, then there is no misunderstanding......

Melissa's QB looked solid, he's a lil short but he's smart with the football...doesn't have a big arm but on the short to intermediate routes he's excellent.....

Rio Grande Valley Shows Well at State

By Matthew Stepp
DFW Writer
Posted Jul 14, 2007

Normally the Rio Grande Valley is considered a laughing stock in Texas High School Football, but for one weekend the RGV teams took on the big boys from across the state. Not only did the Valley show up, but they earned the respect of everyone who had the pleasure of watching them play.

Check the various Texas High School Football message boards across the state in Novemeber. A general theme you may find is the bashing of Rio Grande Valley football, (yours truly has been guilty of it many times).
This weekend 6 RGV teams played in the two divisions of the 7 on 7 State Tournament and all 6 teams represented the Valley well and showed they could compete with the elite in state and even beat the best.

Class 1A LaVilla came to the State Tournament with only 9 players, yet they managed to knock off West Orange-Stark and Madisonville before falling in a heartbreaker to Melissa in bracket play. Edcouch-Elsa was a last second replacement in the State Tournament yet the Yellow Jackets managed a second place finish in their pool including a win over Southlake Carroll. E-E wasn't done as on Saturday morning they knocked off Houston Lamar before falling in a close one to Arlington Lamar.

Mercedes was an after-thought heading into the tournament, however the scrappy Tigers left it all on the field game in and game out and they also stunned some big boys. Mercedes on Friday knocked off Plano East (the largest high school in the state) and Saturday morning they beat 7 on 7 power Katy Cinco Ranch using a unique and confusing offense. MHS fell in the Round of 16 to Coppell by two points.

Weslaco may have had the most dangerous weapon in the tournament in Mishak Rivas. Rivas drew constant roving double and triple teams as teams respected his blazing 4.3 speed. WHS gave state runner-up Houston Stratford all they wanted Saturday morning in a winners bracket game losing 21-14.

San Benito and McAllen Rowe could have packed things in after some close losses on Friday and being sent to the Consolation bracket. However both teams played with passion and heart the entire day. In fact no one wanted to win more than those two teams and they played an exciting consolation championship with San Benito coming out on top 41-34. San Benito's players showed the kind of appreciation you don't normally see, as many of their players were in tears after the win. Mind you this was the CONSOLATION CHAMPIONSHIP, not the championship game. "We are just so happy to be here and play, it's a dream come true to even have a chance to play at a place like Kyle Field," commented one San Benito player.

That kind of dedication and love of the game is what makes Texas High School Football so great. Those kids from the Valley likley won't get scholarships and they likley won't win a state championship, but they play simply because they love the game. The passion for the game is unmatched as even the coaches are encouraging their players on every play and they never get on the referees ever. One referee commented, "I wish we could referee kids like that every game. They don't complain and everything is yes sir and no sir."

The Valley may never win a State Championship anytime soon, but I can say it was a pleasure to watch their athletes, fans and coaches compete this weekend. As 7 on 7 Board President Mike Sneed commented about San Benito, "That's what its all about, those kids couldn't be happier you can't help but smile watching those kids compete."
