I don't know if these are considered as the greatest Aggie football moments since the games were played almost 70 years ago but the Aggies had two close games in 1939 which were important for them to win for the College Football National Champinship of 1939. Remember that ties did not have OT then and the AP voted for the NC based only on the regular season.
The 1939 Aggies were led by the great fullback John Kimbrough and an outstanding defense. My good friend Harold Cowley was a member of that team. During the non-conference schedule the Aggies had one close game and came from behind to beat Santa Clara 7 to 3. In conference the closest game was with SMU on November 11th and was played in the rain. The Aggies recovered the ball inside the SMU ten and scored a td and led 6 to 0. In the fourth quarter SMU started passing and got near the Aggie goal line. A pass was thrown and several players went for the ball and one of them caught it. He was so dirty with mud the officials had to confer with him which team he played for. They found out he was an Aggie so the Aggies got the ball at their two yard line. SMU held and then the Aggies got ready to punt the ball out of their endzone. Bill Conaster punted for the Aggies but it was blocked by SMU and in the scramble to the ball he recovered the punt in the end zone giving SMU the safety. The score was then 6 to 2. The Aggies defense took over the rest of the game and the aggies held on to win the game.
The Aggies decided to go to the Sugar Bowl rather than the Cotton Bowl to play Tulane. It was after this bowl season that the old SWC committed to have their champion play in the Cotton Bowl. Kimbrough had a great game and the Aggies were able to beat Tulane 14 to 13 by virtue of Tulane missing an extra point.

I was at the baseball double-header against the 'horns when "Big John" Byington jacked that game-winning homer. That has to be one of my favorite Texas A&M Aggie moments......

I was in the intramural fields playing softaball when that home run was hit out of Olsen into our outfield. They were playing the game on the sound system of the intramural field and everyone went crazy when that one cleared the fence!
