Saw these stats, scores on Smoaky. Though I only got to see this team play once, these numbers pretty much confirm that they were the best 3a I have ever seen

'83 (3-A) Daingerfield team, 16-0 with 14 shutouts doesn't tell the whole story. Their defense was never scored on.

Daingerfield 35 Kilgore 2 (4-A Kilgore secured a safety against Daingerfield's offense)
Daingerfield 14 Gilmer 0 (6-4 3-A team)
Daingerfield 10 Carthage 6 (4-A State Semifinalist Carthage (11-3 record) intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. Extra point no good)
Daingerfield 27 Linden-Kildare 0 (Linden-Kildare 7-3-1 3-A playoff team)
Daingerfield 42 Omaha Paul Pewitt 0 (Paul Pewitt finished 3-7 in 3-A)
Daingerfield 32 Hughes Springs 0 (Hughes Springs 3-7 in 3-A)
Daingerfield 76 Queen City 0 (Queen City 0-10 in 3-A)
Daingerfield 48 DeKalb 0 (DeKalb 6-4 in 3-A)
Daingerfield 45 Hooks 0 (Hooks 5-5 in 3-A)
Daingerfield 56 New Boston 0 (New Boston 6-4 in 3-A)

The Playoffs
Bi-District: Daingerfield 43 Clarksville 0 (Clarksville 4-7)
Area: Daingerfield 22 Robinson 0 (Robinson 11-1)
Regional: Daingerfield 46 Kaufman 0 (Kaufman 12-1)
Quarterfinal: Daingerfield 51 Gladewater 0 (Gladewater 12-2)
Semifinal: Daingerfield 42 Post 0 (Post 13-2)
State Championship: Daingerfield 42 Sweeny 0 (Sweeny 12-2-2)

In 16 games that season, Daingerfield allowed 356 rushing yards (22.2 ypg.), 681 passing yards (42.5 ypg.) and 1,037 total yards (64.8 ypg.). The defense scored 72 points, intercepted 38 passes and recovered 26 fumbles.

And, only gave up 8 total points the entire season.

1983 Daingerfield Tigers

Record: 16-0 (Finished 3rd in National Poll)

Points for: 631 (39.4 avg)
Points against: 8 (0.5 avg)
Shutouts: 14 (National Record)

Notable information: First team in Texas to finish 16-0. Defense scored 76 points and held opponents on average to less than one foot per play. 8 points allowed entire season, 0 points yielded on defense (1 safety, 1 interception returned for TD). Outscored regular season opponents 385-8, playoff opponents 246-0 (5 playoff opponents with 10+ wins). Defensive backfield won 4x400m relay state championship.

No doubt the best 3A ever. I saw a list one time of all the D1's and NFL guys on this team. It was crazy they had like 4 D1 rb's or something like that.

they for my money are the best TEAM in any classification ever
please post stats to argue this belief

there was some team Waco? masonic Home? Corsicana? Abilene?
from way back who may have gone unscored on

but for my money DF 83 is the best ever in ANY class

I dont think any Everman team was second best....maybe 4th or 5th...I'd put I think 92 Southlake Carroll behind Daingerfield and maybe 1980 Pittsburg

From 1980 and on my top 3

1 Daingerfield 83
2 Jefferson 86
3 Southlake 93

Dennis Alexander told me a few years ago from 1983-2003(when I talked to him) One team in 3A could have moved the ball on his 83 team and that was 86 Jefferon

Jefferson that year beat another stud D-Field team 14-7 in the play-offs

I would rate the title winning Buckeyes pretty high up, offensively that bunch from 2004 might be as good as the defensive side for Daingerfield of 83

83' Dangerfield - Head and shoulders above anyone else .

Honorable Mention

Sealy- in any of their 4 consecutive Championship run years

Cuero 87' - Cuero began a 3 year run to the State championship during the Straight/Mathis years in 85 losing to Daingerfield 47-22- that was followed up by a loss to Jefferson in the 86 State final 24-0 . They finally got over the hump in 87 winning it all against Mcgregor 14-6 which is a very impressive run but the best team without a doubt is 83'Daingerfield. Cuero teams of the mid 80's are a top 3 team in 3a all-time but like I said the best ever is Daingerfield. These teams made thier run when there was one winner per classification which is even more impressive now.

Everman -2001 2002
In the last 10 years, no team has scored more points (in class 3A) than the 2002 Everman team. They scored 732 points in 15 games for an amazing 48.8 ppg average. This was the second year of their back to back state championships.

80' Pittsburgh

Southlake Caroll - 92'

and Cuero 73' 74' 75' once again during their 44 game winning streak and back to back Championship's and making it to the finals in the third year .

That 1980 Pittsburg team was one of the top 5 ever from what I hear. 91 or 92 SLC was awesome, still remember that game against Vernon like it was yesterday.

Here are the highest scoring offenses and stingiest defenses of all-time comparing all teams that won a state championship in any classification.

Given that only 2 state championship teams from the past 20 years made the top 50 in defense (Alto '06 at #38 and La Marque '95 at #42), Daingerfield '83 has a good chance at staying #1 for a long, long time.

Offense has become increasingly the focus over the past 20-30 years. 24 of the 50 highest scoring teams of all time are from just the past 10 seasons.

Off = Average pts scored per game
Def = Average pts allowed per game
MOV = Average margin of victory

For reference state champions were named in the following classifications over the years:

1920-1938 1A
1939-1947 2A
1948-1950 City Conference, 2A and 1A
1951-1971 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A
1972-1979 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A and B
1980-1989 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A
1990-1995 5A (D1 & 2), 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A
1996-1997 5A (D1& 2), 4A (D1 & 2), 3A, 2A and 1A
1998-2005 5A (D1 & 2), 4A (D1 & 2), 3A (D1 & 2), 2A (D1 & 2) and 1A
2006 5A (D1 & 2), 4A (D1 & 2), 3A (D1 & 2), 2A (D1 & 2), 1A (D1 & 2)

No doubt they were the best. Probably cannot be duplicated either. We take D seriously in Celina. The most points in a game scored on us in the last 2 seasons was LH at 22. Against the quality and caliber of teams around today those 14 shutouts would probably be impossible. We had 7 in 05 and could of had 9 but hey that was as good as I will probably ever see in person.
PA 4.685 per game........ Just out of the top 50 points allowed alltime. We did score 803 points that season which tied slc for second for the most points in a season. We were crazy good all the way around in 05.

1. dangerfield 83
2. Pittsburg 80
3. SLC 92

The Buckeyes did have a great offense but I'd rate the 2003 Atlanta team above the 2004 Buckeyes.

I have not decided yet if Atlanta of 2003 was a true juggernaut who played a rough schedule, or a good team that got hot at the right time.

That 03 Atlanta team had one of the quickest defenses I have EVER seen. That defense was the state champion 400 m relay team that year.
I remember hearing that 83 Daingerfield team would punt on 3rd down alot just so they would have a better chance to score!

1992 3A Region I semifinal
Southlake Carroll 39, Vernon 35: The state's top two 3A teams battled before an overflow crowd estimated at 15,500 at Bedford's Pennington Field. Carroll trailed, 21-12, at the half, the first time it had trailed all season.

The Vernon-Southlake Carroll area playoff game in 1992. 15,000 plus at Pennington Field, Dane Johnson played for Carroll, Dexter Butler for Vernon, went down to the last minute with Carroll winning 39-35. Gordon Wood said it was the best he had ever seen.

Amazing stats. One amusing tidbit I remember was that in '95, Sealy went 16-0 and their placekicker scored more points than their 16 opponents combined. Would have loved to see that team matched against some of the other great teams mentioned above.
